Achilles Tang On-hand Meds?

Hey guys and gals,

I finally found a very healthy, colored up, Achilles that is eating like a horse so I couldn't pass it up as I've had my tank vacant specifically for this fish. What are some professional recommendations of some emergency medications that I can keep on hand just in case, god forbid, he comes down with something? I was thinking Formalin for sure. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Well they usually come down with Ich. So i would suggest some sort of copper treatment and your QT tank ready for if it happens.

I was looking at one Seachem makes.

Coppermine? That stuff works well. Just make sure if it happens you follow those directions exactly so you don't stress the fish more. Feed it lots of Nori as well with garlic. It will boost its immune system

Formalin is good for baths.
I like using quick ich x with tank transfer method

Do you think formalin is better than paraguard? I went with paraguard cause it doesn't contain some of the aldehyde that can harm your sandbed and inhabitants. I hear it's superior as well but I've never used either.

Cupramine isn't as effective as coppersafe in my experience nor any gentler. I've used cupramine on 50+ tangs now, coppersafe on about 10.

Okay I'll look into that as well, none of this stuff is expensive so I'm ordering various meds. Any precautions you would recommend while using either or? I'm also looking at vitamins for him. I already dose amino acids so keep that in mind. I was looking at one of the two:

Avoid using prime amquel or any ammonia detoxifiers with meds but especially copper. Expect to lose a lot of copper over the first several days due to absorbtion. So test regularly. If your tang swims in to powerheads it has velvet not ich and act quickly (may be too late).

Remove all media as well during treatment.

Yes I'm looking to treat display until I get quarentine set up. I don't use any ammonia detoxification. The only supps that go in my tank are pictured plus 2 part. Are there any cosmetic signs of velvet? Can you be more specific about the powerhead thing? I used to have a trigger that loved swimming against them.

The video in this velvet thread shows the powerhead symptoms about midway through. Hiding from light, being suddenly cryptic, not eating anymore, spots of various forms especially if quick onset (but if you read through responses you'll see dots aren't necessarily present on body they may impact gills only out of sight), heavy breathing, erratic swimming (first video shows this), etc.

Selcon Zoe and Zoecon are good to use. I don't recommend treating the display. You won't be able to put any corals or inverts into the tank if you do that

Yes after doing a bit more research on copper I realized that. The reason I don't know much about fish is because all of my knowledge in the hobby is around coral. I even have some of Adam's best pieces from Battlecorals... I don't think treating the display would be wise!

I decided that God forbid that time ever comes, I will set up a quarantine the day I notice symptoms. I already have everything on hand. Give me 6 hours and I'll have a 55g quarantine ready to go. More on that shortly, I'm going to go start a new thread on it.

I've heard everyone saying these new Hex and Ich shield medicated foods won't work because the fish won't eat it. Got em in today and just watched Mr. Achilles, Orchid dottyback, and maroon clown destroy this stuff! I'd highly recommend, it's packed with vitamins, HUFA'S, other necessities. Hex-Shield having the highest analysis of all.
