My Acid Trip frag. I have had it for about 6 months. Got bleached one time and came back. Very slow grower.

Just wanted to say... I've been a huge fan of chalice's way, way before this latest craze. I have grown a number of chalice sub species from a number of different sized frags and here is something I've noticed over the years.

When you start with an extremely small frag, say a 1/4"x1/4" single eye piece, the initial growth is nearly always extremely slow. But once you're up to 4 or 5 eyes and the frag is large enough to start taking on piece of or full mysis and you go ahead and feed regularly you will see a marked increase in the speed of growth. For instance I was one of the first owners of the Monster Mash (eventually Tyree Red Watermelon) with only one eye, 1/2" x 1/4". At eye 4 I saw it was putting out the tiniest of feeder tentacles so I would feed it little bits of pieces of mini-mysis. In the time it took to go from 1 to 4 (which was about a year, IIRC) I went from four to 12. And the bigger it got, the faster it grew.

In short these things just need to mature and establish themselves, then you'll see marked growth. Chalices in general are usually moderate to occasionally fast growth for LPS. There's no reason all the prettiest ones grow the slowest- we just chop them up the smallest.

And remember, feed feed feed!

*edit* btw frags looks awesome :P

It's all about mass to grow like you said. if I have one square inch frag and it grows 1/4 for every inch it has of side it will grow 1 hole inch in square space in one month. Now if I have a 5 inch frag and the same growth 1/4 inch for every 1 inch real-estate it has on it's side. This frag will grow four square inches each month. Like stated above bigger frags/colonies grow faster. Feeding it and it having more eyes does also help.

Disclaimer- Yes some coral does grow faster then others but more mas to grow from does make it grow faster, this also is shown with my hanging coral makes it grow faster then putting it on a frag disk.

Hanging corals? Could you explain / show pics please?

Its mostly done with SPS. Cut a frag then take fishing line and hang it in the tank. Thus letting it grow from every angle its a propagation teq there is o encrusting just growing meaning it grows faster and from more angles meaning more growth or more $ for who ever does it.

this is a pretty intersting observation. Has it worked well for you? Any pics showing this technique?

Works will with tin foil under the tank for reflective light. Most Acro's grow in multi branch in a ball shape. But from a progation point of veiw not caring how it looks you have many branches to proon rather then a few.

Ps i did not come up with this i read it in Anthony's propagation book, although this is rarly talked about or used it is indeed better and pramotes the most growth IMO

Any updates on anyones acid trip I am lookin to purchase a frag from a friend just waiting on him

Just an observation. There are so many things that come up here that people have learned in The Book of Coral Propagation by Anthony Calfo. I think it's a must-read for everyone in the hobby.

I have a good sized Flame thrower frag if any one can give me a good size piece of this.

Slightly OT, but i did see a guy who had about a dozen sps frags hanging like A. Calfo wrote about. He said growth was better than on a disk, but maintenance was a real pain since everything would get in his way lol. Making sure corals didnt get hung up on each other, siphoning around the lines, etc...He was working in a 29 gallon though, i imagine a bigger tank would make his whole setup a lot better.

Killer pieces guys! Reminds me of the arc wanted and melting pot chalice. I'm definitely going to have to land a piece of this one. Great pics!

Thats about a month old pic

this pic is going on to 6 months old now.... and trops acid has barely started to cover the disk but no extra colors popping out and this is the slowest chalice i hve owned ...I will try to take a new pic tomorrow

IMO the most over-rated chalice ever. Every frag I have ever seen has failed to grow out with the colors of the original MC. Although dknuckles frag is looking pretty good...

+1. Mines never too off and just withered away slowly and died. Never saw all the colors that it was suppose to get.
