Hey guys, just a few days back, i lost my oc clown pair. Its was sad, frustrating and i almost had tears in my eyes when they died in front of me and i tried fw dips and they dint help at all.

Iv been into this hobby since long but had taken a 2yr break as i was out of town for work. Iv never had a qt before nor ever faced velvet. Dint know tht ut kills fish in jus 24hrs.

currently may tank is fallow n gona keep it for 90 days with jus a few inverts and corals. And im surely gona get a qt.

Iv had a few ick issues before, but never had luck with fw dips. Infact iv always seen that catching fish with ich or any disease causes more stress and fish to die.

As far as qt, i dont undersand thatvhow wud fish survive with no bacteria in the tank, coz once u medicate the tank, all the bacteria are lost.

After reading alot, i came across Acreflavin and hydrogen peroxide.

I read that both these are absolutely reef safe if dosed correctly.

i dont know much about acreflavin, but i know that ozone helps kill ich and velvet.

Since h2o2 works same like ozone, can i dose an amt on regular basis keeping the orp constant in my dt?

Also since my 40g tank is fallow, can i add in the tank?Any basic idea of howmuch to add? I dont have an orp monitor though.

As im plannin on a 250gallon system soon, Even if i do a qt and someday some how i get ich or velvet in my dt and as every1 knows its difficult to catch all fish, and catching them would be almost impossible, can i dose h2o2 on regular basis along with a uv sterilizer?

Also want more info on acreflavin too.

I've experimented with Acriflavine for treating brook & velvet, and IMO it is a suitable replacement for formalin. For treating brook, sometimes just one Acriflavine bath is sufficient followed by transferring the fish into a fresh, sterile QT (to prevent reinfection). For velvet, I use Acriflavine as part of a protocol outlined here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/defeating-marine-velvet-disease.217570/

FYI; most medications will not completely eradicate nitrifying bacteria. Their numbers will be reduced, but will also bounce back quickly. I will often combine four different medications (anti-parasitic, two dewormers, antibiotic) in my QTs will no detectable ammonia afterwards. ;)

Kool.. iv noticed that many have treated fowlr tanks with copper and they had no problems later on. So i still dont understand how wud bacteria get affected using medications. I tried metronidazole with focus but it dint help. Also iv noticed that catching fishes in dt have killed more than saving them once they are infected coz of stress. Obviously i wud never treat fish with copper in dt as ill be having reef setup.

also whah about h202 and uv?

Also fw dip never helped me and fishes die everytime i did tht. Yes iv had bad luck with formalin too..

As per ur thread,

3 steps

1) 5mints fw dip: shud i areate the water? As my ro water is low ph but my fw ph is 7 to 7.5

2) acreflavin 70 mints: what shud the ratio be of water : mg

3) copper or cp for 1 mth. I already bought cupramine.

I would like to know what if i add acreflavin to my qt, regardless of the fish having velvet or no? Also is it ok to treat fish in dt in future incase i get ich or velvet regardless of qt, maybe some mistake etc.

No experience with H2O2 for treating fish diseases; IME UV has minimal benefits, a DE filter is probably a better parasite management tool due to it's higher flow rate. Look here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/diatom-filter-for-treating-external-parasites.212429/

Yes, aerate for at least 30 mins beforehand. pH is unimportant for short 5 min durations.

2) acreflavin 70 mints: what shud the ratio be of water : mg

I recommend using Ruby Reef Rally - which is readily available and contains Acriflavine Neutral premixed in liquid form. Dosage is one ounce per 10 gallons.

3) copper or cp for 1 mth. I already bought cupramine.

CP is better but also harder to get (requires a Rx which can then be filled by a compounding pharmacy).

You can use it in QT, but I have no experience mixing it with other medications (like copper). I've also never used it in a DT. Acriflavine turns the water a rust color and has also stained some of my PVC elbows in QT. So, I personally wouldn't use it in a DT. Also, long term exposure to Acriflavine hasn't been studied. o_O

Well im from india, so ruby is not available here.. as my business is pharma/chemicals, sourcing any chemical is no issue for me.. cp is available. Acriflavin is also available, but i dont know how to use it, as it comes in 100% powdered form.

Not all medications kill bacteria. I run copper 24/7 in my QT for 30 days straight. The tank is fully cycled and is somehow loaded with pods. Meds killing bacteria is a misconception.

I read about the diatom filter, but i never had that idea, tht they remove parasites.. why dont hobbyist use them? Iv been watching videos of famous hobbyists and have never heard about them. Nor i personally researched them. Im sure its not availabke in india and wont be for next 50 years. But im in for diy if any1 has made. And ready to test. Also after reading the blog, i dint understand exactly how they work or design. I did read about powder, but dint understand it.
I also read that ich velvet still come back even after 90 days of keeping fallow. Is tht true? Im keeping my tank at 28.5c as of now though.

Also what about the pods? They too might get stuck. what attracts ich towards DE rather than fishes?

This wont happen unless you introduce it back to the tank. Using a strict QT protocol before adding any fish/invert or coral will go a long way from letting that happen.

The parasites arn't attracted to the Diatomatious Earth. The idea is that they get sucked into the filter and can't pass through it - effectively removing them from the water column. Pods might get sucked into it as well and get caught in the filter, but normally they dont free swim (they like to dwell on surfaces like the glass, rocks or macro algae) so the odds of sucking pods into the filter are low.

Assuming you are using Acriflavine Neutral Power, the dosage is 10 milligrams per litre. Make sure to dissolve thoroughly before adding the fish to the bath treatment. Or if using in a QT, mix in a separate container beforehand (don't dump the powder right in the tank.)

10mg per liter, thts in the tank or if i wana make and store it?

Also what if i dont do a fw dip, since iv always had badluck with it.?

Can i do 70 to 90 acri then 1mnth copper or cp?

As u mentioned, fish can show stress sign using acri, what if i keep a seperate tank for it so fish gets some space to move aroung especially tangs.

I wanted to ask one more thing, sounds dumb, but wht if we add copper (cupramine)everytime while acclimating, then shift the fish to the tank water in a different bucket, then into display? Tht way copper wont enter the main tank and fish get ick or velvet free.

If your talking about doing this all at the same time (ie: the same day) the copper wont kill the parasite that is actually on the fish. It's only capable of killing them after they have fallen off the fish or broken out of their cyst to free swim to a new fish to infect. So there wouldn't be enough time for that to happen during an acclimation. It can take several days for the ich parasite to fall off of a host fish.

H2o2 itself will lower the ORP in saltwater (Apex confirmed)

I would mix it with saltwater (in a container) to create a solution and then dose that. I wouldn't store it.

In my experimentation, I've only had good success treating velvet when I do FW dip + chemical bath + treat with CP (or copper) in a QT. I've tried skipping the FW dip and/or chemical bath, but when I do the fish usually doesn't survive.

Can i do 70 to 90 acri then 1mnth copper or cp?

Yes, but I would still do the FW dip before the acriflavine bath.

How about adding acri directly in the fish holding container?
