I think that folks on both sides of the fence would agree that there is no NEED, but also that it will not hurt anything.
The true test if if the color/growth disappears after discontinued use - there are no cases of this that I can remember, but I am sure that I missed some. I do think that it is reasonable that people see some benefit from when they start, but the start time is often coupled with a renewed interest in the hobby, or some other changes... and it is that overall renewed interest or something else that made the difference. It also could be that a tank just got more mature. The ultimate example of this is Iodine dosing to bring out red color - tons of people claimed that it made all the difference in the world, but when they quit, nothing changed.
