Acropora Color Troubleshoot

Be wary of an increase in phosphate if you choose the "feed more" method. IME, phosphate will increase more than nitrate (not in ppm, but will become a problem more than nitrate). Or at least the phosphate will increase before the nitrate. Phosphate certainly won't help your cause.

I see a lot of softies in your tank pic. I also see a large colony near the center of the FTS that look to be brown Palys maybe? Softies in general are chemically aggressive, and SPS in general are particularly sensitive to this warfare. Leathers and gorgonians are particularly aggressive and I've found brown Palys to be so as well (relative to other Z&Ps) since they slime up so much. Do you use carbon? In a reactor or passively? A good brand? How much/how often do you change?
In regards to the nitrates do you feel it would be better to use sodium or potassium nitrate like suggested earlier in this post? I definitely do not want to up my phosphates since they are already in check.

Yes I do run carbon. Two medium sized bags of ChemiPure Elite carbon run passively in my sump that get changed out every two or so months. These bags are still within the one month time period.

My opinion is that if the fish are being fed well already (no one's skinny or lean), phosphate is at a good place already, then why mess up that balance you've already achieved? Directly adding Potassium/Sodium/Calcium nitrate only affects nitrate (the effect on potassium/sodium/calcium is minimal). It's a simple fix. Low nitrate may not be the problem in your tank, but this is a simple (and inexpensive) way to find out.

You can use Seachem Flourish Nitrogen if that's an easy product for you to find. I've used it in the past as well as Potassium nitrate that I got from www.aquariumfertilizer.com I recently got Sodium nitrate from www.sciencecompany.com

I will definitely look into those products. I had already found Sachem Flourish online and I am looking for reviews of use in a sps tank.

As for my fish they are all nice and fat and healthy. I am by no means trying to upset my nutrient balance.

I am just looking for a means of drawing some more vibrant and full color out of my acros and I thought nutrients may be the issue. If you think that may not be my problem is there anything else that comes to mind that I may have missed?

I mentioned this above. Though I haven't actually come across a source for it. Though I haven't looked very hard as I prefer to add sodium than calcium or potassium even though it's quite minimal. The science company I linked to above doesn't have Calcium nitrate. They do have Potassium nitrate in food grade. The Sodium nitrate I bought is lab grade (<food grade).

Nitrate may be the issue, it may not be. This is biology, not chemistry or math. :confused:

If you do add nitrate, you don't have to add much to see a difference. Be careful so you don't end up with 10 ppm. Ha! Aim for 0.25 ppm, and add that dose once every couple days until you achieve 1-2 ppm or whatever you decide you want to stick with. If this is the issue, then you should see a difference within 2-4 weeks of achieving a readable nitrate level. For many tanks, this is all the difference in the world. If your tank is using close to an equal amount of nitrate that is being supplied already, then you won't see a difference.

The other thing that comes to mind I've already mentioned. :) Chemical warfare. Do you have any other systems that you could experiment by removing some softies?

Another is rock steady parameters. Aside from testing imperfections of both the user and the accuracy of the test kits, you parameters need to be steady. Steady is more important than the actual number. Such as, whether the alkalinity is 7 or 11 dKH, it needs to remain within 0.25 dKH each direction, all the time, on every single test, for many weeks/months running.

Steady parameters also includes when you do water changes. For example, if you like to keep 7.5 dKH in your tank, don't use Instant Ocean (for example) because the bucket mixes to about 11 dKH, and every time you do a water change, especially if you do a bigger water change, you're going to get a small spike. Make sure you you match salinity, temperature, calcium, alkalinity, magnesium (the "big three) of incoming new SW. These things matter. Watch out for an upward creep of salinity if you're dosing lots. Check the tank salinity before every water change, and adjust when needed. The upward creepy of salinity makes all parameters more concentrated.

A note though, that I've found, is that you achieve the best results from rock steady parameters, but I've also found that these tanks are the most sensitive to changes when there are changes - such as power failure or heater failure or something like that. These tanks are used to no changes, and really dislike changes. So sometimes a person may not want to achieve the best of the best if that means the system may be more finicky.

Something that I've done for almost two decades that I've not really come across anyone else doing (for the same purpose) is, 3-4 times per year I do a very large water change. In the neighborhood of 50-75%. Polyp extension for the weeks afterwards is significantly increased, and everything seems like it gets a perk up. I make sure every parameter I can measure for is matched. Years ago I never really understood why these big water changes make such a difference in my tanks, but now I wonder if it is helping to flush chloride from the system so chloride can be replaced by more important trace elements that we don't test for, but also contribute to salinity/specific gravity. Check articles for information on excess chloride and ionic (im)balance. It's widely discussed, not widely agreed upon. It's just something else for you to consider. :)

Yeah I guess it is hard to pinpoint one solution when there really may not be one. If I do go the nitrate route I will be sure to take it slow and keep track of exactly what Im dosing.

The only other system I have is a 14 gallon biocube so the only thing I may be able to remove is my yellow leather coral and it will probably take up most of the tank. LOL.

As for steady parameters I am fairly confident that they do not fluctuate. I have my doser pretty dialed in and I keep track of the growth in the tank as an indicator of when I may need to up my dosing. My water changes are also very careful. I mimic my tank parameters to the salt that I want to use that way when I do my water changes there is little to no fluctuation in my bigger parameters, excluding trace elements. Salinity is checked before every water change to ensure the concentration of my mix.

As for the major water changes I have never heard of that method. It may be worth a little research Im sure.

I check my big three anywhere between a week to two weeks apart depending on the look of the tank (problems and/or growth). Fluctuations are minimal from my tests. In between tests my calcium may shift 10 pmm depending on growth, while the ALK may shift 0.1 in between the tests. I do my best to keep up with my doser so that I keep up with the demands of my corals so that params stay as steady as possible.

As for salinity I should have clarified I DO test both the tank and the new water salinity before doing a water change.
 
Well it sounds stability probably isn't an issue for you then. I'd be looking at the other suggestions above. :)

Yes that is exactly what I am doing.

However I figured Id ask, are you or is anyone else feeding their sps directly at night when the feeders are out? It was suggested to me as it may help more than simply broadcast feeding.
 
I don't feed SPS directly like that. I've tried in the past, and didn't notice a difference. I find amino acids or nitrate help more (provided there is a deficiency).

LOL isn't that the way it always is. Out of curiosity what brand of aminos do you like? Ive tried a fair few myself with no real results.
 
TLF AcroPower or Zeovit Amino Acid Concentrate. Honestly though, you have a lot of softies in there. That may be your main issue.

LOL. I've tried them both. I guess I'll need to look outside the realm of amino acids.

Unfortunately there are very few softies I can pull out of there. What would you suggest?

Imo, it's near impossible to keep softies, LPS, and SPS in the same display tank, all at 100% perfection. They have different requirements. With mixed reefs it's often about choosing particular corals that do well. Maybe your best option is to remove the ones you're not happy with and replace them with different SPS that may (or may not) do better. Even in a dedicated SPS tank with "perfect" parameters there will be pieces that are just not as impressive as others. Sometimes you just have to admit that there are corals that won't like you. :D

Well I will definitely look into upping my nitrates. Hopefully then I will be happy. I might consider taking out what few softies I can but I guess I need to find some more frags then. Hopefully some of them will color up nicely. So any suggestions on some nice acros I can look in to? Maybe something yellow/orange/blue/red? Those are some colors I don't have a lot of.
 
An orange Setosa is probably is easiest orange there is. Setosas are almost always colorful. They come in pink/reddish and orange, but orange is less common.

Caroliniana is often yellow/lime green and is usually fairly easy to keep colorful.

Find frags from fellow reefers and stay away from maricultured mini colonies (on the giant concrete frag plugs) as they tend to be more challenging.

Weeds like Montis and birdnests are usually easy to keep colorful too. Montipora capitata is a weed that I even keep in my own tank. :D It's green with blue polyps. It's only has blue polyps if it's happy though.

Blue, purple and green Milles are typically easy to color up, but not red ones. Milles are easier than Convexa or Hyacinthus though they look very similar.

Try different color varieties of species you already have.
 
Hey did you ever brighten up that purple valida? Mine started as 2" brown frag now is about 4" with bright growth tips and looks like it growing just like yours. I was hoping it would brighten up around the base but concerned it will be just a brown frag with nice tips.. Oh well its been awhile since your last post thought it would be nice to see if you could increase coloration through nitrates or other means.
