Acropora Help Please

The arsenic is a total mystery. Regarding my water filtration, I use a 5 stage BRS RO/DI. I also have a water filter on my house water which is essentially a giant carbon block as I understand. It's called a waterboy system by superior water. I'd like to believe I can rule out any contaminants in my RO/DI after passing through both systems.

Hmmm, now I have to re think where my metals are coming from. I was hoping yours would show similar.

Yes, very strange as I though for sure I would see some metals in the test results having kept those scrappers in there for so long. Could it be magnets or pumps rusting in your tank?

So where is the Arsenic coming from? Also, I dose manganese, 20ml/day in a 180 gal, not sure why but my lfs recommends it. Think this test just creates more questions [emoji30]

The arsenic is a mystery. My Mg looks good so I don't really want to touch that. However, my iodine is low. I may pick up a test kit and some type of supplement to dose here.

I believe “high” arsenic is not that uncommon.

Interesting thread. I posted there as well to get any ideas from those folks with "high" arsenic.

Now that the flame angel is gone... do you have any tester acros in there to check if that was the issue?

Yes. I am watching the one that I caught him nipping at. I haven’t really seen much change yet but the picture below shows what it looked like right before I took out the angel. Looks like some damage along the side.

How long has that piece been in the tank? We should use that piece as a reference for this thread to see if things are improving overall. You mentioned you can't keep them beyond 90 days or so.

Great suggestion. I got this piece on December 6th.

Just did some testing this morning. Here are my results compared to the last tests I took.

ALK up to 8.6 from 8.2 yesterday (scraped all the coraline off my back and side glass, maybe this is the reason as less alk is being absorbed)

Phosphate up to 0.20 from 0.14 on Jan 27th. This is after a water change and adding 1/7th a dose of GFO on Saturday. I may do another ~25 water change today

Nitrate remains at 20

I didn’t read everything everyone said but I do around what I think is 10% water change every week.... you thought of trying that? May have been mentioned before, sorry if it has. Good luck!

This is something I am going to start doing. Don’t know if I mentioned it though but it’s going to be part of the new routine.

It is a little more work. And I guess you spend more on rodi filters and salt (which I think is cheaper than additives) but for stability. It’s key I believe. Like I said good luck. Let us know the results in time.

What coral is that? I see growth tips, but not encrusting.

Just what does that mean? Growth tips but not encrusting, I’ve always wondered about this, some species seem to growth differently. Some seem to encrust more some seem to grow out more. Just wondering if there is a science behind that or if all factors, flow, light, difference in placement, feeding tendencies, if all that is the difference maker? Just wondering if you could go more in depth in that just a ? I’ve wondered for a while now.

That's why I asked what coral it is. Some have different tendencies. But most will encrusted first then grow up. I guess it could be placement in some instances. That would include flow and lighting. Sometimes it's just they way the coral grows.

Hello! And thank you all for your comments and ideas. I have been doing my routine for about a month now with weekly 10% water changes. I am feeding the same and watching my ALK, Nitrates, Phosphates, and salinity carefully. I am only changing GFO when phosphates get above 1.0 and at that time I am only using 1/4 of a dose. I am also adding 1/4 dose of iodine as my ICP test said it was low. It's looking like the acros have improved. Here is a picture of the green stag that is now 90 days young! It hasn't encrusted yet but I am noticing better polyp extension and deeper colors.

Just read through everything and not used 1 thing you mentioned but has not been brought up. You said your cat litter boxes are 10ft away. How diligent are you with cleaning them? I know they release some nasty stuff (ammonia?) hence pregnant women are told not to clean them. It may be nothing but just a thought.

Great observation....Did my wife tell you to post this? Haha. She is always on me about cleaning those litter boxes. I scoop them once a day, but that litter is pretty nasty stuff.

Also, nice avatar. Love that show.

ICP is in! Arsenic is high and iodine is low. Can't wait to hear your thoughts.

Also raised the display tank lights up by roughly an inch. Now about 12" above water level....maybe a little more give 1/2".
Are you using Tropic Marin Pro salt?
My icp test, the same test as you used btw, started showing arsenic after the latest bucket of Tm pro. I then sent in an r/o sample and a freshly made unused batch with the tm pro. The r/0 came back clean and the tm pro sample had arsenic in it. I contacted tm about it and they said they would do an independent test but I haven’t heard back.
