Is the tank next to a window or something? I bet the moon has something to do with it

Jamie Craggs has been doing a lot of research on it, he thinks the moon is an important factor on coral spawning they have been doing a great work to help repopulate reefs.

The general thinking in the field of coral reproductive biology about how corals achieve such remarkably coordinated spawning is:
Corals decide which month to spawn based on accumulated temperature (i.e. after enough days of warm water its spawning month)
Corals decide which day to spawn based on lunar schedule (a certain number of days after the full moon)
Corals decide which hour to spawn based on the timing of sunset (a certain number of hours after sunset)

Overall the cues are thought to be light and temperature.

Congradulations!!!!! That's quite an accomplishment!

I'm have some questions about moonlight being essential for every coral species to spawn. Not all corals in the wild spawn at the same time of year or at the same time of day. (For several years I had yellow stone polyps consistently spawn 2 hours before lights came on irregardless of what time the timer was set and they didn't get any moonlight either.) There may be a role in moonlight sinchronizing multiple species to sapwn at the same time which is what they're doing at the Horneman Museum's Project Coral.

I think that would be a better way of phrasing it, yes. Moonlight appears to synchronize spawning, not to be required for spawning to happen in the first place. Gamete maturation appears to be mostly temperature / condition.

If spawning corals can be made more predictable, then it could open the door to selectively breeding them for hardiness or color .

Was that the only coral that spawned? Thanks for sharing!
I don’t think the moon has to be visible for it to contribute to spawning.
From what I saw it was just the one colony that spawned

It would be interesting if you could capture some of them and start new colony’s from the spawn.

AFAIK that wouldn't work if it's just the one coral spawning - the bundles released during the spawn contain both eggs and sperm, but they can't self-fertilize. When folks like Jamie Craggs and Rich Ross do it in the lab, they use groups of the same type of coral collected very far from each other, to make sure they are not genetic clones of each other. But still very cool to document the spawning to add to the info we know about what might trigger that. This thread has a ton of good info: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/coral-spawn.660618/

Well done! Thanks for posting up.

Thought I would share what I walked into a little after the new year arrived here in the UK.
My Acropora Spawning :)
Ps ignore the dog whining to be picked up lol
I think the Dog wanted to watch the phenomenon also.

Well done on your success and I look forward to reading about your set-up and settings including what if any changes you made recently if you don't mind and get the time to get to type it all up. I would like to think that that is what most hobbyists would love to have happen in their tank and an ever greater impact would be to have at least 2 unrelated corals of each spawning coral so one could hopefully get at least a few young corals grow from the spawn now that would be absolutely the pinnacle of home reef keeping and you are so close we need your secrets.
