hehe nice what lighting are they under? they look like they could morph some more

fishes - they don't look quite like mine - not that it means a whole lot cause obviously they will color adjust some - but with mine the yellow ring is VERY distinct and the mouth is blue like the rim??? i'll take a pic if they ever decide to fully open - they are still not happy :(

well here is a terrible pic (sorry) as i said they are not happy yet but two were open enough to snap a quick pic notice the yellow ring: they are basically identicle to blue eyed dragons but they are from africa - not the caribbean

I had some exactly like that, I got them from Pure Captive. The funny thing is there are no reports that I can find from any shop here or people on-line that can tell me that there is any collecting in Africa what so ever.....

there is collecting in africa, radiant wrasses are from there and i see them from time to time.

Are these only special because they are from Africa? if they are so disease-prone, but the surplus is available...wouldn't it make more sense to get some of the aquacultured ones that seems almost identical to these African zoas that just withers away?

kigs - uhmmm - no
i think i understand your point and it is taken - but the fact that they are from africa IS what makes them special. now before i explain further - you need to understand that not all of us are chopshoppers or price gouging ebayers. i did not buy mine so i could give them a fancy name and charge stupid prices for them - i bought them to add to my collection and the aquarium science knowledge base. in this short 2 page thread i have learned/concluded from peoples experiences:
1) that they are disease prone (likely a handling issue because of the lack of experience of the people of the area) the indo stuff has come a long way in 10 years as the locals realized the potential of their resource and the industry developed around it on many of the islands. maybe if a market developes around the african reefs conservation will follow. the african reefs are in serious trouble as is much of the environment around less developed nations. opening markets that encourage conservation can only help
2) they are from africa but i need to check back with the importer i got these from to be sure which coast cause if its the west coast see #3. however the radiants that twon spoke of come from east coast africa which makes #3 invalid, but at the same time it also invalidates any arguement that they are the same as caribbeans.
3) they "look" a lot like caribbeans. this is really cool if they do come from w africa because guess what this adds up to - wow - the caribbeans are actually likely strains from the africans ie the only current that runs between africa and the caribbean travels west (the same current that brings the gulf states their hurricanes could bring, and does, many species across an open ocean) this is a really interesting (of course only a dna test would confirm - i'm just speculating wildly) from a geographical evolutionary standpoint

anyway enough rambling - now i just need to get them to acclimate to aquarium life as the rest really doesn't matter.
BTW i will be selling them on ebay for 600$ a polyp ;) jk of course

I hope you're not calling some of us chopshoppers and price gouging ebayers? 0.o... If you were able to conclude that they are disease prone, wouldn't you rather wait for the market to develop further to prevent these pointless dieouts of colonies? Not sure how importing colonies that gurantees death encourages conservation...I'd assume that would only encourage further irresponsible abuse of the African reef. If you are speculating that the African strains might be related to the Carribean ones, I don't see why I can't settle for a healthy aquacultured Carribean zoas, instead of encouraging more harvesting of African ones...especially if they are the same? Idk. Maybe I'll kick myself down the road for not obsessing over the fact that they are from Africa hehe :P Good luck to all that are attempting to keep them.

I was talking corals....I know there some fish from them areas but from the folks I have talked to and thier wholesalers they couldn't find anything out as far as coral collection from Africa....Not to say it isn't happening....

Good points John about the currents and such, never thought about it like that....

I hope you're not calling some of us chopshoppers and price gouging ebayers?.

sorry kigs i in no way meant that - i just wanted you to know i started this thread to learn - not start an african zoa frenzie that i would later try to capitalize on like we have all seen before
it really is about the aquarium science for me - simple curiousity :)
i usually only visit this site to read cause there are quite a few zoa experts that are regularly on here and if anyone knew anything about these things - i figuered someone in here would.......

That's ok. I am a chopshopper and price gouging ebayer. You and I, we'll make millions together with these African zoas. Call me. ;)

I think there is probably more than just one morph coming out of the area though....:)
