Aipstasia, the last resort

Nudibranchs worked great for me in my 180 gallons and they were getting real bad.
Yep I had some hopes with them, but here they are selling at 30$ each (and are quite rare) and the fact that I have a wrasse is not pushing me into that direction, unfortunately !

Aiptasia x sucks. I’m trying lemon juice at the moment with a 20gauge needle. If that doesn’t work I’m getting sodium hydroxide. I can’t use nudi’s because I have a wrasse. I’m waiting for a Copperband to show up. I want one anyways so if it doesn’t eat it I won’t be out much.
Copperbands are apparently good to get rid of them. Take time and research a lot if you get one. Initially, QT them and make sure they are strong enough before putting them in the main tank. Mine died after 2 weeks even if he was eating. Got stuck in a powerhead.

Always have success with kalkwasser paste, might take 2 hits.
Not practical if too many though.
Good luck and lets us know they are history.

They eat all corals. I had one and I know. Ate sps, lps !!! Ugh
I know, but this is expected. I mostly have montis and accros but I will live with the consequences. If he eats all the aipstasias that will be worth it. Corals can be replaced or grow back. Tearing down a reef is out of question.

Sorry it has gotten to this point for you.

Good luck with the butterfly.

But you don't have to tear the whole reef down to get rid of aiptasia Unless the rock is just too heavy or all glued together to take out piece by piece.

We have a predominantly torch tank but it does have some other simple sps....montis, birdnest, digi....

We have a 220 and pull the rocks out weekly when we need to. Yes it's annoying but it was the only way to really control them while using shrimp and nudis.

The shrimp and nudis only eat the small soft new ones and butterflies and filefish as you know are hit and miss and eat coral
We lost a lot in meat corals trying a butterfly.

If possible I would try to take the rocks out and put them in tubs with tank water. Do this after a water change so you have the available water.

Go to town on the rock with really whatever you want to use to kill them.

Screw driver and tweezers work best for us.

And before you say you have too much stuff on the rocks here's a pic of our tank.

If things are glued to your rocks that's where the tub of water comes in handy.

HI Merkey! Sure I could try eventually... i have lots of Monti plates and they are tied one rock to another. That would mean breaking corals and disturbing a lot of stuff. Also, on some rocks, it's impossible to kill everything, it's like a mat of aisptasia...almost beautiful. Not sure it's worth it, perhaps someday. Thanks for the tips! :)

That urchin doing a great job on that overflow ,literally see the path behind where he's been ha ha

Best of luck! Excited for the updates!
So far so good. He hasn't touched the hammers yet. I've seen him nipping at some SPS but so does the filefish once in while. And it was expected after all. He goes at the aipstasias. I can't say 'crazy go' after it but it's a constant nipper. As far as I'm concern, he can nip at the Monti plate, it's bigger than a dinner plate. Interesting experience so far. I may consider another Butterfly such as a Raccoon or a longnose. I may try again with a Copperband. It's an experience and I must be ready for anything. Like getting less polyps extensions. I've had reef tanks for over 20 years, maybe it's time to play the game differently.

I understand that there are species of peppermint shrimp that do and some that don't - so you might try other species

as I have 2-3 in each of 3 tanks, and a filefish in the big one and all I have is aptasia in the overflow boxes - so sorry, but don't give up (I know you're not with the butterfly

By the way F Aptasia does indeed work (for the ones in the sump) and I NEVER had luck with Aptasia X

Now if I could find that Xenia eating file fish and doe F Pocillipora, life would be grand

I will try F Aipstasia. Yeah, finding the right species of peppermint is not easy too. Thanks, I will not give up :)
