If they're diatoms, yes. Any new plastic added to the tank can cause their appearance.


Simply excess silicates; almost guaranteed in a new tank.


Time. Once the silicates are consumed by the diatoms, the diatoms will be no more.

Makes sense it's coming from the PVC. I thought it was something to do with the new rock..

New plastic piping and new sand to the sump recently added. Thats my only conclusion.

Rock can be a source, but new sand is a better one.
