Not sure whats going on ,, if u have any ideas
:)

So, I was getting really high reading on Alk with my Reef Crystals salt ,, high enough I was switching salts ,, I bought a buckets of Tropic Marin Pro salt ,, got it yesterday and made a batch of salt to 1.026 ,, everything I have read on this salt ,, and I have read a lot ,, says this salt should test to a Alk number of 7.5 to 8 ,,

I break out my Salifert Alk test kit ,, test kit is good till 12/ 2023 it says ,, I get a Alk number of 14 ,, I am like there is no way that number is right ,, I go get my brand new ,, never used,, Salifert Alk test kit ,, same expiration date ,, do the test and get the same number ,,

I called a fried he uses a Red Sea Alk test kit ,, he will be coming over in the next 2 hours and test with his kit,,

Salifert is a pretty easy test kit to use ,, I know I am not messing up using it, but just in case ,, I will tell ya'll what I am doing ,, in case any of you have used this brand before :

put 4ml of water in the tube
add four drops of the first reagent
fill the 1ml syringe with the second reagent to the 1ml line
add by drops till the water in the tube turns pink

done ,, look at the number on the syringe ,, look at chart

I got no clue,, I just know that 14 number can't be right,,

Let me ask this ,, if this number is right ,, which I just can't see it being right ,, but if it is ,, is there anything I can add to the tank that would drop that Alk number ,, I am thinking a 14 number would fry corals ,, it has to be a bad test kit ,, or I am getting that Alk number because of my RO/DI water ,, I have never heard of that though ,,

For what its worth, I have about 30 total years in using standard Tropic Marin and TM Pro Reef, and have yet to have a single issue with parameters being off. The likelihood of Pro Reef mixing up at 14 ppm Alk is probably around the same as hitting a lottery jackpot. Especially considering your test kit already seems to be reading high....

My TM Pro bucket mixes to around 8 dKH at 1.027. Are you positive the salinity measurement is correct?

Some of the Salifert directions online say to use 2 drops of the KH/Ind, I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Thanks for the info ,, I was freaking when I saw that number ,, I will no when my friend gets here with his Hanna checker ,, guess I am going to the LFS and pick up a Hanna Alk Checker today ,, I use the Hanna Phosphate checker ,,

Like another member posted, check your salinity (with something other than you're using right now). What are your calcium and magnesium levels? If they're also elevated, your salinity is high. For what it's worth, Tropic Marin Pro usually mixes up at about 7.2 dKh for me (35ppt).

4 drops of small bottle, and 4ml of tank water for performing the high range test (Normal) and 2 drops small bottle with 2ML of tank water to perform Low test(anything higher than 20dkh)

I saw these instructions from salifert
Instructions:

1. Add with the 5 ml syringe 4 ml of water in the test vial. For a lower resolution and more tests per kit add 2 instead of 4 ml.

2. Shake the KH-Ind dropping bottle a few times and add 2 drops in the test vial (1 drop for the low resolution mode).

STRANGE!!!
My instructions at home say something different than this on you posted. I'll take a picture of it when I get home tonight

Hopefully OP read the directions in their specific test kit and didn't just go from memory :)

Ok ,, just got done testing everything with my friends Alk Hanna Checker ,, last thing we tested was the fresh RO/DI water I made ,, it tested 6.4 Alk ,, not sure if I need a new RO machine or what?

The Tropic Marin North America CEO told me it should be zero, I bought a RODI unit and the problem is gone. Tank inhabitants look much better

Went to the LFS picked up a new RO/DI unit with a booster pump , didn't have a booster pump on the old system ,, my old unit was about 15 years old ,, the new unit came with filters ,, of course I just ordered a new set yesterday from BRS :) dumped out all the stored water I had ,, and removed all the old water out of the top off tanks ,, picked up a Hanna Alk checker also ,,

Thanks for all the advice :)

Do you have a TDS meter to test your RODI makeup water?

I'm curious to know what your old RO water TDS was.

I didn't have one ,, I have one on the new unit ,,, the LFS guy told me not to read much into what it says though ,, he said the booster pump will mess with that number ,, I want to say he said it makes the TDS bounce around ,, don't hold me to that though ,,
