Because they eat the rock/coraline and poop out sand then the rock is fresh white ready for more algae. I have 2 pincushions im trying to give away, im almost willing to pay shipping.....they scratch my glass and take of with frags I hate them! But great at algae control one of the best actually! But get a good arsenal of different sized brushes and go to town every couple days
