Ammonia spike and two dead snails?!

You should have two, or one sock and a media basket. If you only have the one sock you'll want to pick up another one and a few spares. The nylon ones are best for when on vacation, the felt ones catch more (particularly the 100-micron) and the media baskets are designed for carbon/GFO.

When you buy carbon (I like Red Sea) or GFO (I like Nyos Phosi-Ex), you place in one of the black media bags that come with the Red Sea carbon, rinse under the tap for a minute or two until it runs clear and then place in the bottom of the media basket with some filter floss on top to prevent the media bag from clogging up with detritus.

Toss the filter floss every week and replace the carbon/GFO every 1-2 months. Carbon will clear your water, remove odors and silicates and GFO will bring phosphates down. Instructions on how much you need for your tank size are on the containers.

Carbon and GFO are totally optional, btw.

Yes, although I'd probably get between 4-8 felt ones. That way you can launder a batch, use the nylon ones while they're in the washer and start using them again once they're dry. A lot of people wash them with bleach (you can find some instructions with a Google search). With proper cleaning/laundering they'll last upwards of a year.

As far as I can say yes. They both ate when I feed them (4 hours ago), the smaller one seemed a little bit less exited as usal but not sure if thats me reading too much into it or not.

Other snails are up and running or at least stick to the place where they currently at

I would be very suspect of the test then.

the clowns are tough and could handle 2ppm, but their attritude would change(lethargic, and even possibly laying on the sandbed, but certainly not swimming around and eating). The inverts would be almost dead instantly at 2ppm.

I attached a pic of my rockwork and the two snails. I put them into a seperate container too look over time. The one which is out a little bit is dead for sure, the other one who is deep inside the house I cant tell...


I redid the test with the same result. And I used the same test the previous month (last time last week) and they were all fine, last week it was .2

Left, not dead; right, dead(most likely).

They didn't cause an ammonia spike. What may have is the stopping of nopox. Bacteria was dieing off cuz no more food.
If everything else is fine, your tank should be processing that ammonia quickly.

Your nopox explanation sounds valid. Was it a mistake of me to stop dosing? I thought I would only need it for a specific time to battle high phosphate and nitrate (as part of the red sea cycle method). Phosphate was 0 and nitrate was in a range where I thought I would not need dosing nopox anymore

If you wanted to stop, it was not a mistake.
It probably would have been better to wean off than cold turkey. I would not restart if your intensions are not to use it.

As a total beginner in reef tank in general, NoPox was only a tool for me to get to the right values. Nothing I wanted to dose every day. Also because I thought dosing of this kind isn't necessary if nutrition reached the right values.
But maybe I'm wrong?

I should lower it. And the rock should be processing it also. Anything lower will be better than it is right now.. If your inhabitants are okay now they will be better after the water change. Heat the water to tank temps. Suck out detritus when you are pulling out the water.

Water change (25 percent) is done and ammonia has dropped but not as much as I expected. Its at 0.8ppm maybe it bit more.
Or Was my expectation too high for the water change?

One thing to mention with NOPOX is that Red Sea recommends always running a skimmer when using it to boost aeration. So you never want to use it without also running a skimmer at the same time.

I've used NOPOX for several years, both regularly on my smaller tanks and spot usage on my larger Red Sea 750. I always start with half of the recommended dosage on the bottle and stop whenever I feel I've achieved the desired result (I don't gradually reduce the dosage down unless I'm still halfway towards achieving my goal).

Glas has plenty of algea. I also added nori from time to time but nobody cared.
