I've had a couple of dwarf angels and they might eat a pellet or 2 every now and then but would mostly graze on the live rock. But I recently acquired a juvie Koran Angel that goes to town on pellets but still grazes some. Do dwarfs not generally eat pellets that much or is it just the differences in individual fish?

Hi All,

I would like some advice on angelfish compatibility. Currently, I have a juvenile queen angel fish in my display tank, and it’s about 3 inches long. I’ve had it in my display tank for about six months or so. In my quarantine tank, I currently have a 2 inch juvenile yellow belly regal angelfish. It just started quarantine. When it finishes quarantine, I plan on adding the regal angelfish to my display tank. My question is, is it a recipe for disaster if I have both a queen angelfish and a regal angelfish in the same display tank? I don’t want to lose either. I especially don’t want to lose my spendy regal angelfish! Many thanks in advance.

Individual fish feed differently. Larger angels tend to enjoy pellets more than dwarf, generally speaking. I think it's the size of the fish/pellets and the fact that larger fish are less discriminatory in what they eat in time.

Tank size?

Very likely the Queen will not like its new tankmate. I would give it about a 50/50 chance of working out as individuals vary in their aggression. The divider would certainly help increase the odds.

Somewhat related issue: I’ve read (and heard from several LFS’s) that the regal angel can be a difficult fish to feed. I’m finding that out first-hand. It’s Day 2 of being QT’ed and it barely touched the PE mysis shrimp, Hikari brine and mysis, and pellets. I’ve used garlic extract and Selcon on all foods but it would taste and spit out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Live blackworms and clams. And try omitting the garlic and/or selcon. If its pecking, masstick might work.
Ugh, I was hoping to steer clear of live foods. Will something as small as 2-inches handle black worms and chopped clams? I can’t seem to find them in any of popular online fish stores. I’ve asked a few LFS’s and they only have tubifex (live and prepared versions). Would tubifex worms be a good substitute?

Blackworms are tiny. My baby rainford gobie inhales them, your angel fish will be fine.

With the clams, leave them on the half shell. You cut or mush them up a bit but leave them in the shell. Remove them before they foul.

I have never used tubifex so I dont know.

Well, I didn’t try any live foods but what seemed to work somewhat with my regal angel is Ocean Nutrition Angel Formula. I drop a small piece in and it slowly pecks away at it. What it doesn’t eat, I scoop out and toss.

Live and frozen foods are best. If you must use pellet food you'll want to start with frozen/live and mix pellets with it to get them started. I haven't used pellets in years though.

So new problem with another angel. Juvenile Queen Angel (about 3” long) that I’ve had for about 6 months has stopped eating for the past 3 days. No diet changes and water parameters are better now than before. Only change I can think of is the introduction of mappa puffer, which I’ve QT’ed with CopperSafe and General Cure. Oddly enough, the Queen Angel gets excited when it sees me prepping food but quickly loses interest once food is added. Does anyone have any advice?
