No doubt pulling the sand brought a ton of organics into the water column. Id say your're on the right track, either let it go and replace with fresh water or treat it like you would after using Chemi Clean and try a strait 20% water change 1st then let the skimmer overflow the rest of it. same result in the end i guess.

Few may not agree with me but when that happens to me I just let it run its course and overflow back into the tank. The way I see it it is already in the tank and the skimmer isn't adding anything. The only side effect I see is micro bubbles.

Why can't you temporarily raise the skimmer up out of the water column a bit so that you have control of your skimmer again?

No need to let it overflow or run extremely wet....

Fair point to make it run dry but I think I'd just like a quicker solution.

I've done this before after chemiclean for my fake cyano (dinos). However it took quite a while to get back to normal.

You're right, it would be the same I think. After considering the options I think I'll let it do its overflow thing into a bucket and if I get to the point of like 15g.. I'll just do a 25% waterchange at that point. I'll let you guys know how it goes today!

Quick update: Everything is doing good still one week after all the major changes, no losses, no browning out. I didn't test parameters yesterday because I just discovered WestWorld on HBO and decided it was more important. I'm now questioning my existence and if I am a robot (being that I have no emotions... guess they set that trait low on me).

I went ahead and let the skimmer go wild into a 5g bucket and over 2 hours I only went though 7.5-8g and now it's dialed back in. Simple fix! Just really boring. I would say this method is a totally viable solution to skimmers gone wild!

Everything is still alive, unbelievable! I make huge changes and nothing happens ;Shifty guaranteed something minor will take me down now!

On a side note and note on continuous change (and following in pelphrey's footsteps)... I hate the way my larger rock scape is... so I have some new rock coming and I'll be swapping it out once I get everything scaped and cycled for a bit.

Last major changes to the tank required before we can say the 'build' is complete:

New rock work
Add a Hydra 64 to the center
Add 4 reef octopus octo pulse 4 wavemakers

With all those changes out of the way I can settle back into getting more corals and fish!

Large care package arrived for all my reefing 'needs'.

I finally put on the hydra 64 and I definitely like the upgraded design over the 52s!

I also got the reef octopus octo pulse 4. Just opening the box I already enjoyed it more over the gyre and mp40. I'll cover it in more detail in future posts on why. For the time being I just installed one to see how it is and no complaints and its super strong... also about $100 less than a mp40!

1200 is modest, I think in total it was about another $2500 with the random stuff I got too. But I swear I have everything I need now!

Well..... besides more coral and fish....
