I think we as aquarist need to step back and see what we are doing to our hobby! Greed is starting to happen and do we need to sell one polyp for 170.00? I thought us being members we should support each other and yes if you are going to sell coral at this price then lets give the person the true product.

The guy that was charging more than that for fakes is obviously in the wrong. However when authentic ones are sold at auction we as the buyers set the price. But dont worry Chef, when mine grow out I will sell you one for far less than $170. How does $160 sound? :bigsmile:

hmm...Sweet!
I have felt the same way.
But what do you do when you have $20k+ in livestock from stocking your tank with really nice stuff?
Do you sell frags for 1/2 or less of what you got them for, so everyone just waits for you to get it and then give it to them for nothing?
That is what happens in my local club. Its kind of getting old. I don't even try and sell frags there, unless they are $10 noboby buys anything. And if they do, they hardly ever show up while you re-arrange your schedule to accomodate them. :squigglemouth:
I have been on both sides of the fence on this issue for a while now.....
I still don't know where I stand......lol!!!
Its nice to be able to sell frags here and there to be able to get something new, buy some maintainance stuff or equiptment, but there are some guys I know that are driving some sweet rides from hyping stuff up and selling TINY frags of colonies that end up being worth $5000 or more......
I know what I don't like, is the people that buy stuff only to make money on it. I now realize there is a lot more of that going on than it is true hobbiests.

My feelings exactly. Unfortunately, it's led me to stop offering a lot of my stuff locally, 'cause nobody wants to pay more than a minor fraction of what I invested to get the coral myself. This applies even moreso for my freshwater fish collection. I have a few fish that sell easily for $150+ for a pair online, but I've never had a single person locally offer me even half that. People regularly expect me to invest the time, money, and effort to acquire the rare and beautiful fish and then propagate them so they can get a group for pennies on the dollar, or as a donation to the local club. While a don't mind supporting my local club, I find it tiresome sometimes that no one will put any money forth to reward my efforts, so to speak, and yet they will complain when my $100 bag of fry sells for $15 but the fry are younger than they like.
But, this is now off topic, so I digress. Cheats and theives suck.

the hornets this guy is trying to sell are the real deal. gary spoke with him several times today, so it would be nice if he would explain how this was kinda blown out of proportion and more of a misunderstanding than anything.

hmmm i dont think its being blown up at all if reefpets did not give him direct permision to use his name. If he never spoke with reefpets then he is 1 MILLION percent wrong. Plus come on really??!??! 170 per??! thats murder in the first right there!:wink:

Sounds like you might know this guy being that you know how much we have communicated? The person apologized for the auction. But, that still does not give a person the right to use my name without confirming. And on top of theat he also copied direct wording from my auctions.
Honestly, its worse than what I have posted but I see no reason to keep hammering the person. There were people that sent me his replies to there messages assuring the lineage and so on, again using my name for confirmation. This is how I learned about the person selling them. For these reasons I dont feel like it was blown out of proportion just because the guy admits that he made a mistake by using my name and copying phrases from my auctions. Just because he made it right by admitting the issues and ending the auction does not mean that it was not wrong.
The purpose of this post was to warn people of the auction and that my name was used to help sell his product. If he would have contacted me directly I would have gladly stated that it was not OK to list my name to back the sell of his coral. If he purchased the coral directly from me then by all means I would confirm that the Purple Hornets were the real deal, but this is not the case.

i'm not going to argue over the pricing...there's a reason i dont own any purple hornets yet (wink wink), but the person this seller bought the hornet colony from originally had them verified by gary (apparently). gary is well known for his knowledge of and his actual PH's, so the seller thought it was worth mentioning. i dont know how he worded it, but dragging him thru the mud over a misunderstanding is a bit ridiculous. its not like he's trying to scam anyone. i dont know why people have to start acting like a bunch of high school girls when this stuff comes up. its not worth getting bent out of shape about. now if he posted false pics, and was selling fakes then that would be a different story.......but he's not.

If you were on the other end and paid $1200.00 for coral that you thought were the "real deal" then I guarantee that you would post on here that you had been ripped off. Also, you would have probably sent me a photo asking me if I could confirm that they are real. I get this all of the time because my name is thrown around and 99 percent of it is a lie, just like this time.
