I'm so freaking ignorant in this area.... are there stores that are cabinet stores?

If I bring in a door and say "help me find or develop a more contemporary door"

...are they going to see $$$ signs and want me to buy like $400 doors? ($100 a piece)

A lot of manufacturers make just replacement doors or cabinet fronts. Should be easy to track down and as long as you have the door measurements most should have a selection of door styles to choose from. YOu can get them through most big box stores for sure.

(Sorry if someone else suggested I haven't read the whole thread yet)

I do a, b then c and it looks amazing for around $150

A. Buy some magnets
B. Get a forstner bit
C. Drill a couple holes for magnets in the trim strips (stay shallow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or that planet aquarium tank will become a must have item) and epoxy in the magnets
D. Buy some marine grade plywood, cut down to manageable sizes (4 sections across the front and one on either end)
E. Paint it with a good quality gloss white
F. Drill holes into the back of the plywood and epoxy in magnets

You just "skinned" your entire stand in a contemporary sleek look and updated color scheme

I recommend getting a tool called the rockwell bladerunner and a sheet of birch . you can use it to build your doors, then later frag corals, and build more stuff.

And if you wanted to get REAL fancy you could build a "drink rail" into the top of the panels to hide the top edge of the old stand.

I know enough to be dangerous and have the tools to lose more than a few fingers. Bought a house a year ago and am learning how to do things as I go. Assembled some DIY built ins in a bedroom but that is as close as I get to being a carpenter so far.

Let's not get carried away! (All I did was order some cabinets, build the base, cut and stain the butcher block, and stack it all together!)

Once I get some real skills I've got a few ideas for building some interesting stand options and potential business.

(Yes, I know the doors are off, I haven't adjusted them yet!)

It wasn't a bad first effort! The one I am working on for the back bedroom isn't going as smoothly. Learning lessons as I assemble them, lay the new floor, and start hanging new doors tomorrow.

Cabinets come in increments of 3”. Twelve, 15,18 etc. All the way up to 42” max. Guess 2x24 may work. You could get rta (ready to assembled) , then you wouldn’t have to cut the front off.
