Any reef related injuries out there?

Last black Friday I ordered some corals so was doing a water change and rearranging some rocks in my nano which only has corals. I got a few tiny cuts on my hands from the rocks. Those cuts all got infected and by the next day my whole hand was swollen. I almost had to have surgery but the antibiotics worked thank god. I've had saltwater tanks for 46 years and never had this happen before.
This was the worst finger.

Wow! Some serious stuff in this thread! I've pulled back muscles many times, and I can't say 100% that it was due to my tank, but late last year I got diagnosed with torn rotator cuffs in BOTH shoulders. The only thing we can think of is the repetitive lifting of 5g buckets of SW doing water changes. (I now use a pump and hose to pump the fresh SW in and either the python or my hubby or son to empty the out water.) Just had the first shoulder surgery 2 weeks ago and have to do the other shoulder surgery once I get range of motion back in this one.

A very long time ago, I was cleaning the glass in a 300 gallon tank I had. I think this was in the 90s. My Clown Trigger came up and took a chunk out of the back of my arm.huge amount of blood all over lol. I think he was just curious. He never did it again. Wish I had pictures.

@Mellotang It was about 3 years ago. I had to get the transplant or else I would have lost the eye completely. About 6 months ago I had an ultrasound of the eye. Everything inside works. I’m leaning towards something like the CorNeat K Pro. Google it if you want. Here’s the just before surgery pic. Now I’m an SPS nut. No softie weeds ever again.

A Mycobacterium marinum infection in my hand that lasted 2 years, involved 4 hand surgeries, and left me with permanent hearing loss due to one of the dozen antibiotics I was on being ototoxic. Heavy stuff. Some were TB meds and the last 2 were IV meds and I had a pic line.


Mycobacterium marinum is also called aquariums keepers disease and usually only results in some small blister like lesions that go away. Our body temp is too high. But it is just low enough in our hands and feet that it can


I am a teacher and have a lot of animals. My Burmese pythons bit me. I washed my hands and went on with my business of cleaning cages and fish tanks. Apparently, the bit wound gave access to the Mycobacterium marinum to move into the tendon sheaths in my hand and they decided they didn’t want to leave. I ended up with other lasting effects to. But the hearing loss is the one that is most significant.


mine is one for the medical journals. It was a perfect storm and will likely never happen again. But keep in mind, saltwater has some nasties living in it.

apparently I’m spoiled! I spent six months hauling buckets. Then I said **** this and spent 500 bucks putting together a salt water mixing station. I now have two 25 gal containers. One for fresh ro water and for salt mix water. I haul a python to extract water and then haul a 1/2in hose with a hook on the end to add salt watwr. Does. 500 dollar hit tocthe wallet count t as an injury?

yes. all the time, one time i got a concussion from falling, banging my head on the door, so hard the doorknob knocked a hole in the wall & then got hit by a half full 5 gallon bucket

Yesterday, I went to a shop for new small isolation tank. There was a lot of them packed in the cardboard boxes. I moved my hand under the box with my tank and deeply cut my middle finger with iron clamp sticking out of the box below. Nothing serious but definitely reefing related...

I had the tank water splash in my eye and for several days it was blurry and watering. I put eye drops in several times a day but probably should've seen a specialist. Finally cleared up!

This is part of why I refuse to keep any Zoa’s in my tank at all, it only takes myself messing up, or someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing to interfere and boom potentially deadly consequences.

I’m wondering if there’s a document or list of things that are potentially hazardous in a reef tank? I’m still rarely new to this, so those mistakes are so easily made. Even if you research, sometimes you can miss the correct information

My wife bought a paly thinking it was a zoa. It's always hard watching a coral waste away when it happens. But I was glad when the paly shriveled up and went away. I have a few zoas but I don't frag them. To this day I'm convinced my wife knew what she was buying as I saw her checking our life insurance policies right after I put it in tank lol..

I was moving a condy anemone from one tank to another. As luck would have it, a tentacle hit a cut on my hand. There was a pain like an electric shock up to my shoulder. I dropped the anemone, which exploded when it hit the floor. A piece of tentacle was stuck to the cut. For about ten seconds, my arm was paralyzed with me dancing from the pain.
