Any teenage reefers?

I am a teenager, and I have to agree with Sharknose that while most kids my age are playing sports or busy on a screen, I spend my time free time with my reef tank.

That is an awesome looking tank. Is that a weeping willow toadstool in the corner? I don't fall into the category the original poster is asking about, but I'd assume there might be more teens on Reddit. I know I'm on a few threads there.

I started as a 8 year old in 1968. So I was 5 years into it by the time I became a teenager.

Just turned 20... had my tank running for just shy of 2 years now. Super low budget softy tank with a couple easy LPS.

Don't let anyone tell you reefing has to be expensive. It's as complicated and expensive as you make it ( SPS tank would be way out of my budget and current skill set for example ).

Maybe it's the cynicism in me, but I always think every "teenager" posting online trying to connect with other teenagers is actually a predator.

it is a weeping willow! One of my favorite leather corals!

I’m definitely a predator however I do feel that I always get nervous going to frag swaps or a local coral trade. Never sure how someone will treat you because your younger than them.

I have to agree with you. Every time I go into a LFS and any other pet store I feel most people think I’m too young and don’t know enough to be successful about these subjects.

When I was a teenager I remember my family being on this forum which is how I knew about it! this was years ago so not too surprised population skews older!

OUCH! When I was a teen, we had a rotary dial phone. Regardless, WELCOME!! It's good to see the newer generation joining the hobby.

You're never too young (or old) to be a reefer.

I can see what you mean, but for me I've never had anyone at the lfs or at a coral show think i am too young. Plus, i frequently see kids younger than me shop for corals at the lfs.

I too am a teenager but I have had several years of experience in the LFS (Volunteering mostly) as well as many many many hours of research and learning scientific names.
If I'm not learning in school then chances are I'm on here helping out others (Or in tonights case writing an article for 5 or so hours) or I'll be working on the reef tanks and collecting data on behaviour/care.

It's the same here - I've been given chances to work in my LFSs several times in my time in this hobby and the amount of kids I see younger than me shopping for certain things is surprising.

Welcome to Reef2Reef, @fishmanhenry! We do have some teenagers here. I'm always glad to see young hobbyists joining in. This is a great place to learn and grow together with others.

The Community you have going on here is great and seeing the different ways people run their reefs is so interesting.
