Any Thoughts On The Klir Filter?

Is their a way to install one of these for those who made their own sump using another tank. Say like a standard 55. I ask bc as of now I just use a standard sock holder off the rim, but looking to see how I can add this

I believe I've seen something that you're looking for in one of the vids from Macna on YT. It's offered by Goe's Reef but I am not sure if it is sold as stand alone product without sump purchase. The short video skimming through macna was uploaded by jake adams of reef builders; take a look.

You can use this on your custom made DIY sump...

Just a warning. These don't fit well in a trigger sump. I have an enerald 39. I can squeeze the klir in, I really needed a second one, but no way I will fit two. Also, the adapters to cover the other two filter socks won't fit. They are too close to the klir. I had to make my own. It is ok, but I think I regret the purchase.

It is unfortunate but inevitable that they wont work on EVERY sump but most of the sumps out there are compatible and a few can be compatible with a little modification.

Too bad there is no such thing as a standard for creating sumps. Even the filter socks themselves are slightly different from one to the other.

Do you think a 400 gallon tank with a 1.5 overflow pipe will work with the 4” model klir? I have a dcp 10000 return pump running at 100% it’s rated for 2600gph but I doubt that’s what’s running through the overflow pipe. Maybe 800gph but no way to really tell

I was thinking about getting one of these, but now that I have seen the price in Canada and the cost of the replacement rolls, I will stick with socks for now.

Its running 324.99 CAD$ plus tax.

The replacement roll is almost $20 CAD$

For that kind of cash, I find socks a decent enough value.....lol

Did you include utility cost of you cleaning the socks ? Water / electric / gas ? Or the intangible time? less time cleaning those smelly filthy socks and more time enjoying your tank

I seriously doubt it. On that system and based on that pump, I would go with the 7" instead. If the flow is low, the 7" fleece would end up lasting you a really long time!!! :)

hello guys
my klir fleece roll consumed totally in 6.5 days !!!! 320gph flow..
is this normal, doesn't it supposed to serve a month or so??
what about you guys - for how long did your roll serve??

Mine hasn’t moved in 4 days running 600 gph into it.

I kept in mind the cost of electricity for the washing machine and the cost of filter socks, I buy 3-4 a year normally when considering the value potential.

I can see possible time savings, but for myself I can see no possible scenario of this device saving money in the long run for me.

I spent maybe $30 a year on socks and electricity to wash them total.

Awesome guys, thanks everyone for the replies. I will wait for the 7” hoping it’s in the near future

This is quite normal for a first install of a fleece filter. I have not used the klir but when you first install expect to eat up the fleece. Once you have removed the large proportion of smaller particles you will see a slow down in consumption. My X-filter has a 65m roll and when I first installed it that lasted 14 days. That's with a 17 micron fleece. 50 microns is a little pointless in my opinion.

With all that said there are other factors at play that will greatly affect fleece consumption. First off is efficiency of design. How well is it using its fleece. This is built in and you have little control other than choosing a more efficient fleece filter. Then flow through the filter, the lower the flow the more efficient the fleece. You want to strike a balance so that the fleece comes out dark with no mottling and flow to ensure you are filtering enough tank volume. Personally I'd aim for 2-5 times tank volume.

Next you have stocking and feeding. These play a large part in fleece consumption. I have a moorish idol which requires feeding 6+ times a day and as such my consumption is high compared to someone feeding only once or twice a day. I recently had to QT all my fish due to WS and my consumption has massively reduced. From 4-6 weeks to 12-16 weeks or maybe more as it's still going.

As you can see it's all a bit of a balancing act and your personal consumption is very much down to your system. It does sound though like you could use a fleece filter with a bit more capacity. Have a look at e X-filter 1.7. It's a beast. Or maybe try two Klir's.

Your sock chamber where the klir sits has relatively calm water?
No excessive turbulence or bubbles which would activate the sensor?

I also have been using 200micron socks before the klir (3x4” socks)

no turbulence or bubble.. just calm flow just like before

We are working on that right now. It will be soon. No set date at this time I we do not want to create expectations that we may or may not meet.
How about fleece costs for the 7" ? The RAP marketing video from a couple months ago is quite a bit off on what the 4" fleece is being listed at.

i am trying to figure whats wrong with my fleece consumption
now its better but the motor turn on every 5 min !!!!!!
can you send a photo for your installation and water level at the beginning of the cycle.. within the sump and within the klir

I found a configuration error with mine today. I was updating my adapter bracket to use 2 sided tape in the sock area rather than the weather stripping to lower the bypass volume and when I put the Klir back in I payed close attention to the water level and found it wasn't rising. It seems that when I installed the Klir it pivoted on its hinge a bit and created an opening in the fleece that acted like a bypass. After using the controller to take up the slack the water level started increasing in the filter area and activated the motor on the Klir. The filter is now advancing.

I think that the current activation (5-10 minutes) and usage rate might be an inaccurate measure as I effectively had not filtered the water for two weeks. I will keep an eye on my usage and post back in a day or two once it stabilizes.
