I believe it is illegal to remove any wildlife from Florida waters. I would advise against it.
I don't believe these are legal to take, some things are with a Florida fishing license but are usually softies like zooanthids.
Please don't collect it. Caribbean stony corals are at extreme risk already, and it is highly illegal in most places. It will survive getting stepped on, but the chances of it surviving in an aquarium are pretty slim. These sorts of corals are very delicate as is evidenced by how much damage they take in bleaching events, and very little is known about their care. It is almost certain that a wild colony would swiftly perish in anything but the most advanced systems. If you get caught taking it, not only will it result in legal and environmental issues, but it will drag the name of the hobby through the mud. Reefkeeping is already plenty unpopular in the public eye with the controversies in Hawaii, taking corals off a Florida reef would be even worse. For your own sake, the coral's sake, and the hobby itself, leave the thing where you found it. Plenty of aquacultured corals look just as nice and grow in the same way, the only differences being that they will survive and they are legal.Thing is somebody is gonna step on this and crush it here. No less beautiful, but this is not a montastraea cavernosa. It is, rather a Pseudodiploria strigosa or Carribean Brain Coral.Seeing them in the wild is a treasure hard to duplicate. I saw this 2 weeks ago in the British Virgin Islands. I could never duplicate this in my tank..

There were a lot of thick coral structures, but I not good at identifying which was what. On the first day I was trying to maneuver around one structure and the current slammed me into it. Scrapped my right arm on the coral and it stung the Ba Jesus out of my arm. Big nasty blister welp for two days. I had taken a full wet suit, but the water was around 80 degrees and I didn’t use it. Paid the price for no protection.
