Anyone else lose their cool

All the time.. Facebook is really the worst for your nerves. My favorite is the ones that chime in and say "I have 15 tangs in a 75 and their healthy" right in the middle of trying to help a new kid that's battling an ich problem. I like to call it the Because I Do Something Dumb, Makes It Ok Argument.

They seem to think they can stick a tang in a 20 long and once it grows they can find it a new home. They don't realize it impacts thier organ growth as well. There's a reason that whenever you see a Regal Tang in a 5000 gallon tank he's almost the size of your head.

And that's not even addressing the stress element.

Literally got banned from there (then reinstated by a different admin) for posting this exact meme.

I know people want to have certain fish because of their beauty. It causes them to convince themselves of what they want to believe to be true. Just human nature. If you want to do something and 50 people tell you it will turn out badly and 2 tell you it will be fine, many will believe the two.

For me, fish that are too big make your tank look smaller than it really is and odd. Even in my 6' tank I only am going to have two fish that will get to a fairly large size.

Yeah. I have a 180.. I stopped at 2 tangs.. I'd love more.. I see people with tanks crammed full. But it's just not responsible.

On a side note everyone that comes over asks how I successfully have such a fat, big powder blue.. That's why. He's not under constant stress all the time.

Everyone is different not everyone reads between the lines in this hobby you can't get through to everyone so good luck trying it's a never ending battle.

I think you have to accept the simple fact that you will never convince every person that fish "X" needs a tank that is "Y" big. All we can do is make a recommendation, state the reasoning behind that recommendation and provide links to threads/posts/articles to support the recommendation.

The hope is they will continue their research and make an informed decision. But as we all know, many make the decision to "do it anyway", and there isn't much that can be done. In my opinion, there is no point in losing ones cool over it.

Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them. The rest is up to them.

No you size tank will ever fit an entire type of fish, you always have that odd ball that grows way bigger than normal and you really should always give a bigger tank than "necessary" because sometimes they grow bigger than expected.

I agree with dbl, no sense in losing your cool. It's always going to tough trying to convince those who want to be swayed by a small minority that doing the opposite of can work.
It happens all the time. Not just with fish, but cycling a tank, proper lighting , etc. I can't remember how many times I've read posts where more experienced hobbyists have recommended to slowly stock a tank with fish and corals. In no time shortly after the cycle, the tank is jammed packed. The person can't figure out why fish keep dieing, corals lose color, rtn, stn, stay closed up or whatever happens afterwards.
As much as it pains you, you still want to help without saying I told you so. What you hope is that they learn from their mistakes and take the advice from the masses instead of the exceptions of the one or two that it may have worked for.
In the end the worst part is that the animals are the real losers.
