Anyone ever haddermal palytoxin poisoning on here.

To some ot up had a patch of gha on a huge zoa rock in tank was using forceps to pull it off while in the tank. Think i may have disturbed them a bit but not much and yes these are the big uglys ones that everyone says have it. Well wasnt wearing gloves and did it at probably 1 am monday morninh i have a half amputated finger with no feeilng that i didnt realize i had a decent open cut . After done washed hands with cold soapys watet and hydro peroxided my cut

To tuesday aroun 4pm throat hurt out of noware really bad and withing a few hours body aches headaches almost to point i cant get out of bed no cough but do have a pretty hot fever and chills even when up against fireplace.

Just to put this out there, if you think you may have been poisoned with palytoxin (which can definitely happen with an open wound), you should call poison control and/or speak with a medical professional.

Have had covid this doesnt feel even remotely the same i was just worried cause a fresh open cut and the aches and chills happened out of nowhere went fr9m fine with sore throat past couple hours to body got hit my train in like 3 mins

It can be a problem in water - particularly with open wounds - but most palytoxin poisoning cases in the hobby do happen from people aerosolizing the toxin.

I did just that a while back... Numb for days on end. It went away finely! If you breath so to speak air from it - in your lungs, get in your eyes, showing any rashes, your in major trouble... CALL THEM just to find out...! Do that now...!!!

I called they said any exposure go to er. I dont have a cough or breathing issues at all just beat and fever and chills . Sore throat is there but almost gone its very weird

Go to doctor and let know possibility. I got it twice in the eye, but did not go systemic. The pain and blindness was not fun.

Very small cut just dont have good nerves to feel in that finger anymore so didnt even notice seems not infected

Generally, palys are the ones with high quantities of palytoxin, but zoas and other things may have palytoxin in them too (see below).

I do have to correct you here, Palytoxin has been found in Palythoa (Protopalythoa) and Zoanthus genus specimens, and may be present in Parazoanthus genus specimens as well, so it has been found in zoanthids (even the reefs.com article "The Dangers (and Myths) of Zoa Toxicity – Part 1" which tries to downplay the danger of the toxin in aquaria is based [poorly] off of a scientific study that shows some zoas contain the toxin) - though the level of toxicity is generally only high in Palythoa spp. corals. The species you are likely thinking of is the first species the toxin was discovered in Palythoa toxica. That said, the toxin is very potent, so it can still cause some pretty unpleasant symptoms even in tiny quantities, and there have been a number of cases of people suffering serious effects from zoas (hence the "melting eyes" thing referenced by the OP).

I wish I could find the studies I read through when I first learned about palytoxin and started studying up on it, as they had some pretty extensive lists detailing palytoxin levels in multiple wild specimens of various species. Also, there is speculation that you might be able to aquaculture non-toxic specimens similar to how non-toxic fugu (pufferfish) is cultured these days.

Anyway, yeah, wear PPE, be smart, and you'll be fine (and, admittedly, a lot of people who don't follow that advice are still fine too).

Palytoxin is a serious issue. But I haven't been able to find any documented case of anyone being killed by palytoxin (although anecdotally there supposedly was a cross contamination death caused by an aquarium in a pharmacy, if anyone has a reputable link I'd love ot see it). Deaths by ingesting palytoxin from contaminated seafood on the other hand can be found. In my risk/reward equation I'm more worried getting catching something from another person or from eating something improperly prepared, not from any of my aquariums (~3 dozen). If your risk/reward equation excludes ANY exposure to palytoxin, it can be found in other animals besides just zoas/palys so you should probably find another hobby. Just FYI, thel dinoflagellate Ostreopsis ovata which makes palytoxin is found worldwide can be found not only in animals but also on macroalgae so that might be a consideration when visiting seashores.

Also worth mentioning that you can get some nasty infections out of a reef tank. Palytoxin isn't the only reason to wear gloves in your tank.

Rsv virus floored everyone on the Xmas before, I have no idea where your from but in Britain everyone is ill again, exactly as before covid and that was???? Rsv .get well soon
