ANYONE ever have a fish totally disappear?

I had a yellow clown goby disappear. I had it for months, he was healthy and well established and one morning I looked at the tank and he was gone. No trace around the tank, in the back chambers or in the rocks.

Im starting to notice that theres a lot of us who have had gobies vanish vs some of the other fish...I had two myself and a starry blenny...we need a pole lol

Two Rainford gobys, one disappeared after two days, the other a week later, no trace. Then there was the sea hare. Let’s not forget the emerald crabs that never last longer than a week. No crusties on floor, no trace

I had 2 fire fish that decided to take over a hole created by my ywg/pistol shrimp -- that was super weird. I thought they both vanished then the next day realized they had made that their bolt hole.

Prior to that, I bought a yasha goby, which at that time was the most money I ever spent on a fish. I never saw it again after adding it to my tank.

More recently -- my orchid dottyback that I had for 2 years vanished after I added a serpent star to my tank. The star hasn't gone after any other fish so IDK what happened there.

And if you want fun and exciting ways to find a dead fish. My wife always complains that I never let her pick out anything. So we decided we were going to get a clown fish, she picked out a juvi picasso clown she likes. A week later I find it half sucked into my gyre.

what kind of mess did you get? what is it made of and how will it hold to salt creep? Also will the holes be small enough to block light or cast shadows?

I ordered a custom lid from Octo Aquatics. It's polycarbonate with 1/4" clear mesh. I've made DIY ones previously with window screen framing and 1/4" mesh from Bulk Reef.

The 1/4" mesh does block the light slightly; I've never measured it with a par meter, but visually it looks like maybe 5-10%. If there's an area of the mesh that gets splashed routinely, it can build up a bit of salt creep, but it rinses right off.

"Worm holes" is more real that it sounds. A healthy reef tank will easily have enough scavengers to completely decompose a small fish in matter of days. Among the scavengers there are worms, like bristle worm. If a small fish died in the middle of the night, in a hole, then got consumed by worms, it's literally disappeared to worm hole... It's just not an interdimentional one.

though i suppose if you have a big enough rock structure and tank you could have rather large amounts of worms and other cleaners

Yep. Added a pistol shrimp and watchman and saw them one time in 6 months. I saw them at night a couple months ago but haven't seen them since.

My diamond goby vanished, even moved tanks a month later no trace no bones. I even sifted the sand trying to see where he ended up

yes it happens have a honey damsel missing now I did see my coral beauty show a bit of aggression towards him now he is MIA?

lol, Yes, Yes I have. nothing more annoying than losing a fish with no indication of what happened. had a diamond goby just vanish.

lost a gold CB shrimp for a very long time then it appeared was over a year
