Anyone ever tried to replicate sun movement?

If the goal is to reduce shading then additional reflectors could also be part of the solution.

I think that's a good idea , lifting the light and adding reflector to mix the light and make it less focused

My design is like that but my rail arc is reverse to decrease the light height in correlation to water surface in the middle of the arc vs making it higher off the water surface most of the day.

so you would need at least another motor/configuration to make it turn towards the water... Mine would be like a cart on a rail it would change angle as it moves .. I understand that you want to keep the light source cloe to water , but how close does it need to be ? I mean I've seen setups with lights like 2 foot high.

your idea is good too, making it higher on the edges would help the fading on sunrise and sunset maybe even recreating the athmospheric filtration of some intensity... but it makes it that mach difficult to DIY lol
 
I think this can be a achieved by having several lights in a kind of arc, like 10-12 Ai prime and program then to turn on sun movement an turn of in the opposite situation, that should cover the entire tank, and give full blast of the tank, similar to sun that send light from every angle.

If it's done with a single point of light you won't be able to give full blast for the whole tank, an par will be lower at the higher point.

I want to program the lights on my next tank to do that, when when the sun is set, moon start to raise, that should be really cool.
 
Liking the concepts here. However on a side note, there are seasonal lighting table programs available thru Neptune Apex and probably other formats as well.
Also couldn’t you add 2(+) smaller lights on either side of the main lighting to achieve sunrise/ sunset effect?
Don’t get me wrong, Im not knocking a moving light rail or articulating fixture but wondering about the maintenance on moving parts hanging above the tank.

What about doing a DIY LED setup on curved panel, like a Samsung curved TV frame mounted horizontally over the tank? Less lights on either side with a heavier concentration in the middle and have channels set to fade from side to side.

That's the point I made earlier about my concept, these days with dimming capabilities, its kind of obsolete.

I thought my concept up way back before dimmable T5s existed, LEDs weren't around either.
My concept was thought up with halides in mind only

Good point too , that's what I wanted by asking on this forum , all kind of advices and experiences :) there are some led fixtures wich are larger than others, but am I wrong or the most expensives/permormant ones includes less quantity of leds? C.Eymann's light itself appears to have only 1 led , I don't know much about leds but I wonder if a led 'ballast' is the expensive part? That could make possible to supply power to one led at a time and creating a roof of leds wich could recreate sun's movement.

Are you wanting to do this mechanically or via lighting with spectrum and intensity?

Some controllers allow this. Reef Angel for example has custom libraries that allow tides, geo location, storms, lightning (both based on real time checks not a set time), sunrise and sunset.

I think the most expensive part of that setup would be the controller. This sounds like the best solution. The side LEDs could even be mounted at an angle. Pairing this with dimmable T5 would address the esthetic issue mentioned above.

FWIW, I wouldn't buy a kit. That would be like paying someone else to shop for me. But I do like your idea of a fixed canopy with a series of lights programmed in sequence. That's way less clunky than the mechanical solutions of the past.
