I just get the satisfaction every 2 weeks when I do a water change. My tank is so happy the next 2 weeks. Everyone now a days says that don't work with corals. I'm here to say it does and my tanks have thrived for years. Note I don't do sticks. Them just sitting there with no movement don't satisfy ne

I haven’t done a water change in 4 years in my heavily stocked with corals and fish mixed reef. I do have ALOT of rock and a skimmer which I believe are very important. First time in 35 years I’ve tried the no water change regimen.

BIG tip of the hat for the Assasi Trigger, my absolute favorite Triggerfish.

I got my first Assasi around 90 or 91? Back in the day, there'd be advertisements in the back of TFH Magazine and I found a guy in Egypt who shipped into the USA. Long before online shopping, I think I sent him mail with a cashiers check, lol... I even remember his name, 30 years later. Something like Gamal El Fouli. I filled a 180 with Red Sea fish...

I love threads like this man. Most of this was before I was even born, but it's so interesting to me. I want to write a book one day about the history of fishkeeping

Ya hes my favorite, never really see them so 3 years ago I saw it and bought it. Haven't seen one since in any of the many lfs.

Yes!!! Water changes, water changes water changes!!! I believe in skimmers and water changes and all that jazz. Then again, I was taught how to reef by my dad who’s been reefing for 40 years. He was the dude who brought sticks to Houston! Props to you dad you’re a legend, all the tanks are doing really well!

Ha! Im old school because im old, lol.
Filter sock, skimmer, carx, small carbon reactor, MH's, good flow and bare bottom.
I run a no scheduled water change system which is not old school, lol.
Did the 10% a week forever and it is recommended for anyone that is new/old to the hobby because it works!
I researched the no scheduled water change method and set my 120 up from day one with that method.
For me it works and I dont see me going back.
Water changes or not, test and get in tune with your tank.
Pick your parameters and strive to keep them their.
This will keep you from constantly changing things and leads to a very stable tank.
Pic last night.
Almost forgot Live rock. This 120 has 50% live 50% caribsea.
After 15 months you cant tell the difference.

I am as Old School as you can get because I was almost standing on the dock when the first fish were imported to New York in 1971. Thats when I started my still running Old School tank. I have no sump, no dosers, no controllers and use a reverse Undergravel filter and DIY skimmer and DIY algae scrubber. I change some water maybe 4 times a year, sometimes less and now I collect my own NSW behind my house.

The link is under my name but I understand if you read this on a smart phone it isn't smart enough to show you the link.
100% of the proceeds go to MS research in my wife's name.

These tanks are stunning!!! I'm a noob so forgive this probably dumb question.... I see some tanks with coralline algae but others don't look like it's there at all. Is it in all tanks but some need it more than others because of what they're keeping (hence they let it grow more) while others try to suppress it? I didn't give this much thought until I saw some of these pics.

I so love it that old school works!!

My first marine tank was in 1972. I still have my old TFH magazines from that era. Thirty years ago, I wrote an article for FAMA about the same topic as your book. So much has changed, that it is hard to comprehend.
