I forgot to mention that I do use ICP testing 2-4 times per year. Add trace elements based on that testing. Here is my 90 gallon mixed reef. Up and running for 7 years without major problems

Hey Tim, this is off topic but how do you have the lights mounted for this tank?

They were fun and challenging aspect of this setup! They are custom designed and built LEDs mounted in the ceiling (floor) under the upper balcony. I used 5000K and 6500K Cree XP-G2 and Blue and Royal Blue XP-E2 LED stars and 16° optics which gives about 400-500 PAR at the surface even thouth they are just shy of 5 feet away from the surface. Honest question : what are the “sticks” you’re referring to?

I call them trees. Stylophora are one of my favorites. Their leaves move in the "wind". ;Shamefullyembarrased

I take exception to this, my sps have plenty of movement, I'm old school just not as much as others on here. Water changes, t5 with about 14k spectrum, skimmer, no fancy dosers, and I only test alk when something looks off

Looks like a rare white pinecone evergreen to me. ;Joyful. Simply gorgeous!

I used to bleach my corals every week to kill the algae. I still have the coral, although it's in a box not a tank.

I have admired them for years. I am mostly old school myself. I have my fish only 140, my softy 65 gallon tank and now my "tree" 40 gallon tank. Not sure which I enjoy the most. But having 3 gives me options to move things if needed. I don't mind doing water changes. Stirring up the substrate and cleaning filters. And you sir are a stinker. ;Joyful. Stylophora are not as picky as other sps. I had some do well under inexpensive lighting for a year before updating for a clam. Give one a try some time. Your stick could grow into a beautiful tree. ;Shamefullyembarrased

This is how I feel. I love my skimmer. Sorry about all the coral. I have used tweezers to pull algae off of mine, regularly. Enjoy the new skimmer.

I still several of those magazines. Interesting articles on fish collecting with bleach , cyanide, and blasting.

I guess I’m old school. Metal halide running on ballasts I bought in 2001. T12 VHO on ballasts bought at the same time. My skimmer is from ~1998 and will outperform anything on the market today. No Apex, and never will. I test when I’m bored, usually just to confirm what I already suspect my levels are, unless I notice something not looking right. I try to do monthly water changes, but that doesn’t always happen. DSB in my fuge. And I NEVER vacuum my gravel. I never even knew that was a thing until recently.

I think that about sums up my old school habits.

Any of you guys remember diatom filters where you have the white filter the white diatom powder cringed to and u could such out all your bad algae and polish your water crystal clear???? Loved using that thing i gotta see if they still make them

Out of the 5 I got one working. But many of them are from the 70s and some from the 60s

What is the name of this coral? Looks great I have a few millies but none that extend that far! Also some are talking used to run I still run 400w halides with vho! Got probably 10 more years of bulbs in the garage lol.
