Anyone running ozone????

Ozone increases the redox potential of your system. Ozone can help prevent disease, tannin buildup, etc. Think of it as carbon on roids. Injecting the ozone into the skimmer is the recommended course of action... mixes effectively and can off-gas a bit as well. Ozone can be overdone... just ease the throttle on. A redox meter can be an effective means of controlling your dosing... Hope that helps some...

Cheers!

Hey Lee I been running ozone on my reef for 3 years.... I can come over and help you out with it

bump...... anyone else???? i currently run np pellets but have exp nothing but problems since i put them online so im removing them.... the guy i bought it from said he was selling it because he runs the np pellets and it kills the bacteria so it was kinda pointless.....thoughts????

I thought O3 can make plastics (skimmer body) brittle, or quickly decay? Thats why it was recommended to run the O3 in a junk skimmer (seaclone)...? Also make sure to run the effluent over some carbon...cant remember the reasoning, but it was pretty important.

If I were going to run ozone (very limited knowledge) I would run the outflow through a reactor filled with high grade carbon, and run that outflow into a skimmer to de-gass whatever was left.

Shame to hear that about the pellets...I have been wondering to myself when I was going to make the jump and see what they do. My new tank is mainly stocked with fish right now, but I still wouldnt like to lose the colonies I brought from the old tank. Not to create a tangent, but what do you think killed them? How much do you feed your corals?

My alk crept up to 10 and with the pellets that's to high it took the corals out... You gotta keep a real stable alk around 7 or 8 max!!!! My tank has ran from 8 to 12 and I never exp a single problem.... Put the pellets on and every week I lost something... I'm only running 300ml of pellets on a 250gal system I'm suppose to be running 1000ml forget that....
I'm going back to vodka it always worked and worked great for me.... No clue why I switched...:(

For the same reason i tried them. Its less daily maintenance :D

If my frag tank where i tried them was in my living room, i would be using vodka since ill be around the tank everyday. But with my frag tank being in the basement, i dont get down there everyday to drop some vodka in there...the pellets would have been the perfect solution for me.

I however am not totally writing them off yet, im going to give it 6 months and let the tank mature...then ill try pellets again.

im going to give the a try on my breeder setup. if they dont show some improvement in there then i will be jumping over to ozone. i heard alot of pros but they say you have to be very careful

Ozone is basically an unstable version of oxygen. It binds with just about anything it touches. That can be good as it makes it easier to pull out organics. It also kills any bacteria that comes in contact with it, which can be good and bad. The bad side of it is that ozone can do a lot of damage if it is not used properly. If too much is used and not properly accounted for, it will harm your corals and fish. If too much is used, it can also harm you and your family.

After the water is run through the ozone reactor, do run it through carbon to bind any excess ozone.

I wanted to get away from vodka I guess after my Dino outbreak so I went the pellet route.... Pellets are for sure not my cup of tea I hate them with a passion fwiw.... As for ozone we had bob fenner as a guest at one of our meetings "I missed :(" and what I got from the re cap was we should all be running ozone for healthier cleaner tanks.... A few local members here in Vegas run them and love it!!!! The president of my local club has ran it for a real long time and he tank is awesome and crystal clear... I figured if I can get away from carbon dosing all together and make my life simple no dosing or stupid pellets etc and achieve the same results why not???? I'm always up for trying new things some work some don't obviously.... Heck I was the first in Vegas to dose vodka they all thought I was crazy when I asked if anyone was doing it... After they watched my tank for 6 months to a year I got a whole bunch dosing lol.... Someone has to be the trend setter....;)

Good on ya Troy... If you're not learning, you're missing the best part of the hobby, IMO. Ozone is a good (but not "necessary") tool... used liberally in commercial (as well as some private) setups. There are other ways of achieving the same ends... But situationally dependent. I say give it a go and tell us all what we're missing... nobody can fault it's use, especially if done wisely and judiciously!
BTW, I have seen ozone injected into vertex and octopus skimmers for extensive durations with no apparent harm to the skimmer or pump. I'm sure there have been cases where anecdoctally it may seen harmful, but I don't sweat it.

I've been using Ozone for the last couple years on my Hunting clothes....thinking about giving it a go in my tank. Does anyone have a link to a write up on Ozone use in home aquaria?

I've had nothing but success with my Ecobak pellets... never had a problem with N but it keeps P down to about .04.... where it was .5 before i started using

Be careful with the Ozone, i know someone who crashed his entire tank using it

I dose vodka and use ozone. I personally don't think one replaces the other...they do different things for me.
