Anyone running Tunze Silence 1073.06?

Hi all,

Mine has been running for just over 2 weeks and it's still making a steady humming noise that I can hear from across the living room (5-6 meters). It's plumbed in via a vinyl hose, sits on a pad, is not touching any walls, etc... I've tried to take it apart and put it back together with no effect whatsoever.

My understanding that these pumps are meant to be near silent, to the point where you don't hear them working when you stick your head into the sump. Have I misunderstood?

The Tunze and Sicce's are the same pumps.

Used both, and they both hum. My reef would be dead silent without that hum.

I have not tried a Eheim, yet.

That doesn't sound promising...

I will have a chance to try the Eheim CompactOn 5000, as my LFS is going to have it in stock soon, but it's not a cheap trial

Will do, but the LFS owner said Tunze should be quieter... He is actually coming over to my place later today to check up on the pump, so I'll see what he thinks about that hum. I took the pump to him before, but of course we couldn't hear anything in the store.

I have an Eheim Compact 5000, it is relatively quiet but it is far from silent, it has a low frequency hum that will travel through walls and be quite irritating at night.

I use mine as a water change pump, brilliant little pump, moves water but being a large AC pump it is not super quiet and does hum. I replaced it with a Red Dragon for a return pump.

Pricey yes, but very quiet... I cannot hear mine granted it is underwater but from around 1 foot away my hearing is not good enough to hear anything. It cost me 700AUD roughly, but my tank is right outside my bedroom so that price is cheap for the peace and quiet it brings.

Cool Seeing you're also in AU - where did you get yours from? Prices that I see are around the $1.3K AUD mark (or maybe I'm looking at wrong models).

The traditional 1260 pump moves 640gph and the CompactOn 1000 moves 250gph. The traditional pump is far more quiet. It is bigger, more expensive and uses more wattage but it’s worth it. CompactOn is not near the built quality of their old-school pumps.

I have a ECOTech Vectra pump as well, they are pretty quiet, not silent but no annoying buzz or hum.

I would disagree with build quality, Compact are a good pump, but going compact is a trade off in my opinion. I was under the assumption the Compact pumps are Eden pumps.

I run a 1073.008 on my 45 frag system and its quiet with no hum.
Contact roger he may be able to help.
Its not the norm.

One other thing. You said it sits on a pad. Did you use the rubber feet?

Thanks! Is the .040 enough for a 120 tank? I have a 139 (RS525) and got the .060 for the increased flow. Perhaps the smaller pumps are a bit quieter and I could go for a 0.50.

One other thing. You said it sits on a pad. Did you use the rubber feet?

Yes, on the pad with rubber feet.

The only thing I can also remotely blame is the hose - it's not very soft, just standard vynil, so doesn't really bend much and I had to pretty much cut it to size, so that may be passing some vibration to the pipe...

Quiet and I run it throttled down 50% or so.
I run about 300gph max through my sump/overflow.
I could have went with a small pump but my stand is 36" so 5' head pressure on my system and the pump has plenty of power left.

I agree that it's a lot of water, but there must be something out there that's quiet. Perhaps the Red Dragons, but at $1.3K it's going to be a while before I can justify it
