Anyone running Tunze Silence 1073.06?

No noise and I run it throttled down 50% or so.
I run about 300gph max through my sump/overflow.
I could have went with a small pump but my stand is 36" so 5' head pressure on my system and the pump has plenty of power left.
Perhaps downsizing would be an option for me. I'll need to read up on how much throughput I actually need - the tank is still cycling and I haven't yet made up my mind on what's going in it later :)

I think all the AC pumps are going to be audible, I have a hard time believing people when they say I have an AC pump and it is dead silent, no pump is silent including a red dragon.

DC are quieter, but with DC, quality is usually a bit more costly. The Vectra range are not silent, but they are quiet and the do not have the low frequency hum of AC, they make more of a whirring sound which is not piercing nor does it carry.

There are others, Jebao for example but I would recommend over sizing these as when run close to maximum they make noise.

These are the only brands I can comment on, I have at the moment, Sicce, NYOS, Eheim, Vectra, Jebao and an Aqua one pump at home. All my AC pumps hum, it is just how loud or how far the frequency will carry.

Maybe throttling an AC is the answer, but I have never tried this so cannot comment.

Cool. I have always run lower than most through my sumps. I always shoot for 2-3 times. Here is a pic. I am almost 10 months from startup.

I would disagree with build quality, Compact are a good pump, but going compact is a trade off in my opinion. I was under the assumption the Compact pumps are Eden pumps.
They are both indeed Eheim brand. The CompactOn is a budget friendly line that originally was really popular with water cooled computer users. I do disagree with the build quality comparing them side by side. The traditional line double the price for a reason.

Yea I edited my post from no noise to quiet.
Quiet is subjective but to me its quiet as I have no doors on my stand and its 2 feet away from the couch for what its worth lol.

I'd be happy with the hum at 1-2 feet, but I can hear it from 15 feet away, which is just a tad too much for my liking. Of course when the TV is on or something, you can't hear anything, but I know the hum is still there :) Maybe I'm being overly picky of course...

Probably a bad impeller.
Contact roger on the Tunze thread here. Its under waranty.
He will take care of you.

Thanks, I'll reach out to him, but I am in Australia, so I suspect I'll need to find someone local. I can always go through my LFS too - he's friendly and willing to help.

My LFS owner came over and said that the humming noise from that 1073.060 is pretty standard, but seeing that it's driving me nuts, he swapped over the pump for a smaller one - the 1073.050. He's a really good guy :)

I've yet to install it, but will do so shortly and see how that goes. It should be quieter, I think...

The 1073.05 is Tunze’s DC controllable pump. It should run more quietly.
Yes, it's been running for less than a day, so probably not fully settled in yet, but even now I can hear that it's quieter. It's not dead quiet, but I can now hear the water splashing in the return over the hum, which means the overall humming level went down :) this is from about 3-4 meters away.

What's also interesting is that it came packaged with the controller for a wavemaker, which includes pulsing, etc... Is that what they do now, as the manual is showing a simpler control with only the power knob?

I thought as much, but no i would not say you are picky, the low frequency hum of a large AC pump is annoying.

You should try the wave function to see if it works... a lot of DC pump manufacturers are now including wave functions on return pumps for closed loop applications.

Yes, these functions do work (pulse, wave and feed timer), just feels strange on a pump :) And of course the return is acting crazy when the pump is pulsating. I won't be using any of these, but was surprised to see them on the control.

I guess it makes sense in a closed loop system though.

I have a number of Tunze products, most of which I'm quite happy with because of how silent they are. However, the 1073.060, while a wonderful pump otherwise, is not quiet.

Your best bet would be to use silicone hose on the outlet and a thicker silicone pad under it. But even then, you'll know it's on.

Again, I'd generally recommend Tunze to anyone who asked. But I wouldn't use this particular pump as your 24/7 return if silence is the goal. The noise was definitely enough to have me order an RD3 to replace it with.

For any other application where noise is of no concern, this pump will totally rock it.

Thanks! I'm actually using 1073.05 now and it's a little bit quieter, but I can still hear it. I guess my expectations of what silent is with a sump have changed since my original post - I can hear the water splashing more than anything now :)

I'm more-or-less used to it now, so all is good.

RD pumps are something I'll consider for my next tank ;)
