was thinking about picking up a 240w mh with t5 giesman fixture

to replace my Radion

my focus is mainly zoa but i do want the best growth

I have heard that MH get the biggest head size in Zoas

250w 14k Phoenix along with 7 royal blue 3w Cree LEDs on a 24" cube here. Mine are all doing well

I've got a 175W 20K Hamilton bulb along with two 24 watt T5 actinics over my 20 gallon tank and all my zoanthids look great as well.

i got a fishneedit 150w MH with 20k bulb on my 20gallon. got 2 different frags that arent doing well for whatever reason, but the other zoas are doing just fine.

+1

I got some Sunny D's off a guy and they were the biggest Polyps I have ever seen (Besides Grandis).

They were also crazy bright orange like nothing that I have ever seen before.

He used Metal Halide.

So yes, I would say that Metal Halide would be a great choice for Zoanthids.

Just because people use them much less frequently than LED's does not mean they are bad.

And most people would tell you the opposite.

Most people switched because of High Costs.

Bulb Replacement
Chiller
More Watts

If Halides didn't heat up tanks and were not so expensive to use you would see a ton more people using them.

For what its worth, I run 250 watt radiums on a hamilton HQI ballast and my zoas tend to look great. I also run 4 reefbrite blue strips and 2 T5 blue plus bulbs. Thinking about getting rid of 2 of the reefbrites though and replacing with 2 more t5s. That's the ratio that JasonFox and WWC use on their tanks.

I am not impressed with T5 actinic bulbs. I always used VHO super actinic or the 454 bulb.
The Blue Plus bulbs were pretty nice

Good info to know.

I had no idea jfox and wwc used halide and t5

I was thinking of using xm20k bulb with 2 blue plus

I was think running only 2 of the t5 ati actinic and 250w radium

You won't be able to run a 250w radium everyone runs are mogul, that fixture is a de bulb.
