Im considering adding a MP60 to my 9 foot tank for some much needed flow. Looking for any reviews good and bad. Theres not much out there...

I think you are better off putting a closed loop or using little powerheads spread out in the back of the tank

I have a MP40 and they are great powerheads. For the price you can do something with a controller/wave boxes/etc and koralias or any of the other pumps and accomplish the same though. I got one MP40 to test it out and see if I would get more. Once I have some extra funds I will probably end up getting the MP40s or MP60s to upgrade my flow but if you want to do it cheaper but with more pumps visible there are other options. The only bad thing I've ever heard is the price. If the mp doesn't work perfectly they are very helpful and typically send a part to fix the problem free. That's why when you see a used MP for sale the price is still high even for a used item. They're good. HTH.

I have an 40 and 60 on my tank. The flow and undertow of the 60 is crazy. You will have tons of flow with it. The noise to me is a non issue with the 60. The 40 actually makes more noise. With your size tank the 60 will be a great addition

Nice. How thick is your tank? I saw the mp40s are rated up to 3/4" and 60s are 1". I want to get one of each but don't want to have it fall off my 3/4"

With 1" you're going to need the MP60 or a high-end Tunze. I have the MP60 but it is loud. Flow and undertow is amazing though. If you don't like loud don't get an MP60. They are way louder than the MP40.

There not comparable, azjohnny. There is hardly any undertow with a Tunze. Tunze relies on shooting water out of the unit, while Ecotech relies on the pulling power and pushing power of their powerheads. The MP60 will suck detrius out from live rock, that you didn't even know was in there!

I don't believe that the MP40 is louder than the MP60, by any means. I've owned all of them, and the MP60 is notably louder, but not to a point that it's obnoxious (although, I wouldn't run one unless my tank was in-wall). What I love about them is they have vents in them for cooling the motor down. It was actually running cooler than my MP40wES was! Ecotech needs to do the same design for the MP40's, but I digress...

The flow from any of the MP-XX's out there are unrivaled because of their design. No one comes close, and Ecotech makes sure of it (Cha-ching + many customers = lots of lawyers to protect their investment).

I'm not a Ecotech spokesboy, either. I actually dislike that they have a lock on the market with the design they have. I just know this stuff from personal use and buying all this stuff in the past. There's nothing out there that even comes close to the undertow, control-ability, and design.

I've had two MP60's since they came out two years ago and love them. I only run them at 60-70% on a 5' x 2' x 29" tank (180gl sps tank). The are amazing PH's and really enjoy their reliability too. BUT...they are definitely noisy, so much so that I have considered going back to Tunze just to eliminate the noise factor. I definitely like their clean look inside the tank, great customer support, very reliable and they do an amazing job at circulating H2O around the tank for my sps corals.

HTH

+1....very well stated!

what I find hilarious is people saying MP's of any size are noise makers, I spend 20 minutes or so each perfectly aligning mine sure, but they are ALMOST perfectly silent. I have had many people over with mp10's look in my tank and ask why I have my 40's turned off...I point out they are running at 100% each, they call bull so I have to open my stand to let them look at the controllers...

My point is these can be totally livable IF you take the time to set them up correctly. I really wish I had a directional mic I could use to make a vid for youtube showing how to get them perfect.

My tank is 3/4" and my, 40 is louder then my 60, but neither is bad. The noise is a non issue to me

Well you probably run the 40 near max power and the 60 throttled. So it makes sense the 40 is louder right? What power levels you use?

I have them synced and running at 40-45% reef crest mode. It stripped the sand in the middle of the tank to the bottom. I can get a nice wave going when I put them in pulse mode. Detritus does not stand a chance in the tank. Since your tank is a little longer your going to run them at a higher % I'm sure

I just dont get the noise thing people are always talking about. Maybe im extremly hard of hearing. The MP10s and MP40s I have used were not noisey at all. I just got my hands on my own MP60 for my new build which is not running yet but I take care of a friends tank when he is out of town thats running three MP60s and I have never once even noticed them. People need to understand that an external motor is going to make more noise than a pump that resides in the tank.

I'm not saying they are completely silent but I find it hard to believe that the noise is so bad it out weighs the benefits. I highly encourage anyone who is concerned about noise issues for any of the MP pumps to go see one in person and decide for yourself.

My 2 cents.

It depends a lot on the environment you're in, what surfaces the noise is bouncing off of, etc. Also depends what other noises there are. If the furnace is running I can't hear my MP60. With my cabinet doors open I can hear my skimmer and I can't hear the MP60.

My MP60 sounds like a powerdrill running, it's the fan that's noisy on mine, not the motor humming. I've had the motor replaced 3 times now thinking there was something wrong.

Are the 40s and 60s both at 40%?
