Anyone Using MP60s?

Im considering adding a MP60 to my 9 foot tank for some much needed flow. Looking for any reviews good and bad. Theres not much out there...

MP's are louder than the competition...more than several have noted the 60 is much worse than the 40. This has been my experience as well.

I think you are better off putting a closed loop or using little powerheads spread out in the back of the tank

Worth considering IMO depending on the design and layout of the tank. Powerheads would be my personal preference.

Yeah my hesitation was the noise of the MP60s but i like the clean look

"Ultimate clean" is a Tunze Stream mounted in a Tunze Rock - not something hanging off the outside of the tank like a giant wart. IMO

With 1" you're going to need the MP60 or a high-end Tunze. I have the MP60 but it is loud. Flow and undertow is amazing though. If you don't like loud don't get an MP60. They are way louder than the MP40.

Not entirely accurate. All the Tunze pump magnets are upgradable - so get the size you want/need! (I think Seios may be the only other make with this option.)

There not comparable, azjohnny. There is hardly any undertow with a Tunze.

Flip, not sure what happened in your tank (every one is different), but the undertow is stronger as well as more effective with a Tunze as the water carries more force for the very reasons you have suggested there is less. Stronger due to the nozzle giving a little focus to the flow and more effective because the intake water has less "reprocessed" water due to the nozzle throwing processed water further away from the intake.

Tunze actually posted a great vid on YouTube that demonstrates the effects visually so it's easy to see. Search on YouTube for "tunzeus flow and turbulence" to locate the vid.

what I find hilarious is people saying MP's of any size are noise makers, I spend 20 minutes or so each perfectly aligning mine sure, but they are ALMOST perfectly silent. I have had many people over with mp10's look in my tank and ask why I have my 40's turned off...I point out they are running at 100% each, they call bull so I have to open my stand to let them look at the controllers...

My point is these can be totally livable IF you take the time to set them up correctly. I really wish I had a directional mic I could use to make a vid for youtube showing how to get them perfect.

I don't see why it's ok to have to take 20 minutes to silence a brand new pump...one more on a list of too many downsides for the price in my book.

If budget were a concern but you really want the fat, stubby flow of the mp40 (maybe you want 3-4 mp40's across the back?) I may suggest the Korallas. For the price you get reasonable performance but zero frills.

Given you're shopping in the aisle you are I'm thinking budget at least isn't your leading requirement...

For a long, relatively narrow tank, I don't think I could really recommend anything but Tunze. The flow pattern just fits. Also, economy is good, flexibilty in deployment is maximal, durability is very good and replacement parts are reasonably priced. The option for anything like a Tunze Rock is unique to this line of pumps if hiding your water movers is really high on your priority list. My guess is that Rocks would not be required for satisfactory aesthetic results.

My $0.02 :)

That was a lot more than $0.02 lol

Good summary Matt.

Thanks everyone for the input. Im still saving up for one of these routes. Both (Tunze 6255 or MP60) are going to cost $700 plus... :(

Quite frankly....the MP60's ARE NOISY and I am a big fan of EcoTech and love their powerheads. I loved Tunzes too when i was running (2) 6205's.

Now I do have (2) MP20's in my 60gl cube and those are very quiet and hardly noticeable.....probably because the dry side is in the rear of the tank and blocking most of the noise, but the MP20's are noticably quieter.

I love my MP60's (I have a short 5' in length 180gl tank) and love their flow pattern, BUT they definitely make noise and it is annoying. And I did spend a ton of time positioning the wetside by placing my ear on both the front panel and side panel to fine tune them, so I do have them dialed in.

To that end, I chose MP60's because I did not like looking at power cors inside my tank, and quite frankly, I dealt with a lot of Tunze issues when they first came out with their 6_05 series and got impatient with all the recalls, etc. Love Tunze and EcoTech and is personal preference IMHO!

So I ended up ordering a mp40 for starters. Shows up tomorrow. After I play with it a bit ill get another or a 60. Probably a 60

I love my MP60s. They are on a 3'w x 7' l x 2' h peninsula rimless tank. Very clean and uncluttered. They are both mounted on the wall side, with a hole through the wall for service. That puts the motors inside the wall and makes them nearly silent. Even with them running at 50% because of the tremendous undertow, there is a lot of circulation 7 feet away.

I'm watching some of the videos now. I will report back.

I just put a tunze ts24 kit in my 135, which is two 6100 powerheads and 7095 controller. I put the power up to around 40%, and set the controller to pulse I believe and the next day I had no sand in the middle of my tank. These things are powerful. Lol, and quiet cant really hear them running or ramping up and down.

Well i got a MP40 and a MP60. MP40 noise isn't too bad and has decent flow. I set it up behind my rock to keep the back clean.

The MP60 is LOUD. Even at 20% its obnoxious and can be heard across the room. Ecotech confirmed it sounds defective, working on getting it fixed or returned in general.

I went through the same ordeal, your new one will be just as loud. Trust me, I had them replace my dry side 3 times for the same reason, it's just how they sound. You need to just return it and get something else!

Does it sound like a power drill kind of?

Im thinking the same. Im waiting to hear back from MarineDepot on returning it. It looks like the Tunze 6255 might be out now. I was trying to go cordless but I think this is gonna be the way to go.

Absolutely, you'll be sad when you find out these things are noisy as heck no matter how many times you replace them.
