Aquaforest Transition

Great! I have ordered the 22kg Reef Salt. I will get started with the full Aquaforest program just as soon as I get Alk, Ca and Mg at optimal levels. Thanks for all of the help @Perry. You have been a great help!

Perry, I currently use RC salt and want to switch to Aquaforest salt just to see if I get some additional color and more PE. I don't think I am ready to go full Aquaforest system I just want to try the salt and see what changes. Any advise or concerns I should be aware of?

I tried the balling method and since I have a relatively small tank I had a problem with the liter bottles ( the 1,2,3 ) but since I'm really only starting out I gave it up now that I'm more established I'm interested in it again since it seem cheaper than Red Sea ( especially the salt) so what exactly do I need to start with other than salt? I only have a mix of frags at the moment, been using Seachem fusion 1&2 plus Seachem complete along with instant ocean salt.
Thanks

No not really, just realize it mixes at a much lower value than RC for alk, so you will see that decline :) I would start with the Reef Salt, since you do not plan on the full system yet. Cheers~!

The balling system will work well, especially with smaller tanks. The 3 bottles cover all your macro and trace minerals, which is a bonus. You could also begin with Reef Salt if you plan to run without probiotics. AF Carbon and AF Phos Minus will also compliment the system well. If you feel like converting to the probiotic version, please keep us informed and we can guide you through.... Cheers!

Has anyone else had problems with the AF salt containers cracking during shipping? I am 0/2 from Amazon. The last shipment had 25% leaking into the shipping box. I had to reject the shipment. I am trying DrsFostersSmith to see if they can package the salt any better. I hope I can find a good supplier.

I had received 2 from amazon as well that were cracked, I found out it was more than likely the shippers fault for being like Ace Ventura while it was being shipped. I get all of my Aquaforest products now from Saltysupply.com. I have been on the AF system for about 4 months now and I love it. Corals are coloring up great and growing amazing.

I ordered once from amazon and next directly from Salty supply. Both arrived in perfect condition. I think sometime the carriers make a lot of mess. I had broken buckets earlier from BRS and also PETCO but I dont think its their fault.

I definitely recommend Salty Supply. They are top notch and sell a ton of other items I am always looking for.

I do as well, I ordered a bucket of the Probiotic reef salt, instead of the owner shipping it to me and it taking a day. He called my cell and told me he was just going to drive it to my house since he lives around the corner. Amazing company and great customer service.

Wow, now that is serious customer service there:) Cheers!

I'm following along on this thread as I'm kind of in the same boat as samba_dad. I just purchased a 22kg bucket of reef salt and plan to make the transition to the Aquaforest program.

I got mine from Dr. Fosters and Smith, came in in box with popcorn shipping materials to protect. Bucket was fine. I have not made the switch yet, starting with the reef salt. Then might go probiotic.. Anyone switched from RC to Aquaforest reef salt? If so, how's it going so far?

Whenever you guys start your transition just keep in mind that there will be a big difference at alk level as AF salt generally give 7-8dkH maximum. So introduce this slowly in your system if you are running it at higher dKH.

I just received my bucket of Reef Salt from Amazon. When I opened the door it looked like a small refrigerator box. Upon opening, it was stuffed with brown paper with the bucket on the bottom. I live in a second floor apartment so I know the FedEx guy was mumbling bad words.

I already keep alk @ 7.5, but fill sure I will have to increase dosing since RC has much higher alk levels.. I think @ 10-12.. I thought I would start the process by mixing some of both salts and doing small water changes and slowly change over to the Aquaforest when the RC runs out. Thoughts?

I would lower by taking dosing of alk, ca, and mag offline, or you could do SMALL water changes to gradually allow the elements to fall. Spikes or increases in alk are what irritate corals, especially SPS. I am not too sure about the mixing salts, and do not think there will be any adverse effects from making slow water changes over to AF. Cheers :)

I am going to make the same switch...let me know how yours goes! I have 5 DOS pumps going now with the RS system, and am still going back and forth about switching

Perry, my tank consumes a good bit of alk and calcium daily, I would be concerned about stop dosing. I change about 8 gallons a week on a 115 gal system using RC. RC has a high magnesium content, so I don't dos it at all. My current alk is @ 7.5 and cacium @ 400, Magnesium @ 1480. That's pretty close to Aquaforest Reef salt, except for the magnesium. So in my case should I just do small water changes as I am with RC and monitor my levels of Alk, Cal, and Mag thru testing? My tank really looks good now, but always looking for better color. So being very cautious but like the results I have seen with Aquaforest Reef salt.
