What size reef aquarium would you recommend to someone just getting into the hobby.

The bigger the better I would start at atleast 55. The bigger the tank the more room for error you have.

75-90 gallon with a 20-30 sump or refugium. This allows room for mistakes and change is coral types.

Maybe you should of specified in your question the amount of $ u can work with . I would also love a 90 gallon first tank but let's be real that's close to $10,000 so why do people suggest that ????

I don't think he's looking to set up a new tank for himself, just looking for what everyone else recommends for a future thread.

Man where do you get your tanks from the Mafia. I spent a total of $300 for a New 75gal a used 55gal for a sump, bought the skimmer used from lfs plus the lighting. Posted on local forum for who had free rock and got far more than needed. and purchased my water from the lfs. You don't have to be a baller to own larger equipment you just need to get the idea a BRAND NEW out your mind and shop and ask around. This will allow you to buy new thing over a course of a year or two and by then your tank should start paying for some things.
and people suggest it because it can be done at a low price if your willing to search, ask, and go get.
I wouldn't PERSONALLY buy a Red Sea or other name brand tanks (would be nice) or brand new when you can go for one day to garage and yard sells and come home with GREAT DEALs and still have money in your pocket. you don't have to have a silver spoon nor should you try and keep up with the jones so i don't think high ticket when buying equipment just deals.
Thats how people can say that.

All lot of good deals can be found on craigs list also. It really doesn't matter what size tank you buy or can afford it all about enjoying the hobby.

I spent around 150 for my diy led light and I would put it up against any led light out. You can build a setup for a lot cheaper than 1300.....especially a pico. It's all about how handy you are and not buying a name brand. You can have just as good results with cheaper equipment as you can with the expensive brands.

prices are the same no matter where East or West, North or South its if your in the name brand game is where you pay for it at. Don't get me wrong for those who can afford the name brand items so that they can sit with there friends or come on the forum and drop brands names is fine but when my SPS, and LPS grows just as fast if not faster than theirs and there asking me how i do and got garage sell equipment and they have all the Name Brand and high ticket equipment i laugh i laugh hard.
Theres to many good Reefer Hobbyist out there that will almost give the equipment to you if you post and ask.
Mike007 you'll make your chose but shop EVERYWHERE for equipment and if you don't like the hobby your not out a couple of grand and if you love it then you have a great foothold on the hobby.

100% the hobby is suppose to be relaxing, enjoyable, and fun not whos got what name brand and how much i spent. Some people have turned it into a Hollywood Hobby they forgot its meant to keep us from take from the ocean as much.

God has nothing to do with it, i purchased a good size frag from your side of the world last week at a great price but i also called and talked to the person and they gave me a great deal. i have the same thing as far as bills go but i took the time (not saying you haven't) to get to know my fellow hobbyist and many out of state and i don't have a problem with haggling with someone for a better deal new or used nor doing the drive for a free 65gallon Clear View tank and stand someone was giving away for free, i also give away free or low price so guess a reputation is better than fine gold. The maintenance on a larger tank can be very simple when you plan well its a nightmare when you want to keep your hand in the tank 24-7 and want to do everything by hand. My tanks get 1hr a maintenance a week and spread out over the 7 days and one day for 2hrs if needed. that includes feedings.
I had a 34gal 20 gal 8gal and 4gal and my larger tanks are far more forgiving than the smaller ones were. i have a 10gal thats plumbed into my main systems and i just watch it because out side of cleaning of the class and feeding because plumbed into the rest of my systems. To each his own but spent far less than you have and have far more that pays for itself WELL. one of the Best investment i've done so far.

and i respect Br00kly than lets see what Mike007 gets since we kinda hijacked his thread. I'm personally SORRY Mike007

I started out with a 90 gallon and it was a perfect size for me to start out with. It was big enough that it had better stability and was more forgiving of my newbie mistakes. One can make their tank as maintenance free or labor intensive as they wish, depending on their life style. If I had made the same mistakes in a smaller tank, the results would have been more severe and probably would've made me leave the hobby.

I started this thread to get input from you guys and gals so that we could give some input so that we might help others that would like to get into this hobby. You don't have to be rich to have reef. Whatever budget you may have you can still start out small and still enjoy the hobby. There are vendors on this forum that can hook you up. There are nano tanks that have everything needed all you have to do is add water and livestock. Thankyou for your posts.

Never used a chiller. I run old school 250 watt Radiums on galaxy ballasts. Im not really in to the whole led fad. A couple of good computer fans and it stays under 80 degrees. As far as corals, I usually buy local and trade and when I can I sell to people at good prices to keep things rolling.
