I started out with a corner 5 gallon but only had a goby, shrimp, mushrooms and a featherduster. PC lighting and a little power head. I ran carbon and did lots of little water changes. Very successful little tide pool I made.
Back in the day pic!

Here is another one I did before I got into keeping SPS. Halide, carbon and small frequent water changes.

HAHA..Thanks. I was feeding the itch while I was reading and studying about full "pimped out" reefs at the time. I figured the more you know the better your off financially and over all keeping a reef. Knowledge is priceless. Ignorance is very expensive.

That is a good looking tank.
I kept FW for as long as I can remember. Then got a good deal on a 100g tank and stand. Spent the next year researching, reading, visiting forums and websites.
Here's what I started with-

Do what your budget will allow, take your time(nothing good happens fast in this hobby) and most important enjoy your new piece of the ocean.

Never used a chiller. I run old school 250 watt Radiums on galaxy ballasts. Im not really in to the whole led fad. A couple of good computer fans and it stays under 80 degrees. As far as corals, I usually buy local and trade and when I can I sell to people at good prices to keep things rolling.
OOPS!! somebody got deleted, looks like im talking to myself.

I started with a hand me down 75 w/ PC lighting system (free). Found a nice stand through word of mouth

$200.
Shopped around online for best prices and shipping. NEVER bought anything full price. Bought dry rock and live sand and exercised patience. The only reason it has to cost a ton of money is if you have to have it NOW, or you have to have name brand.

The 75 was very forgiving of my newbie mistakes so I think 55-75 is a good starter place.

My second was a 55 w/stand, sump, all plumbing, lights and skimmer, plus a nice powerhead. all that from Craigslist for $170. I had to replace a couple of things like the return pump and I upgraded the stand. But there are always good deals on Craigslist and local forums, you just have to be patient and get out of the NOW, NOW, NOW mentality.

Just got a super nice 46 bow front w/stand from this forum just last week. Gonna be my new seahorse tank.

Patience is key in this hobby ;)
