Aquascaping help

I like the look you came up with. There is a lot you can do to create/and give the illusions of space. It will ultimitly keep changing for you as well as things begin to settle in and you start fitting in corals. Looks sweet though.

Thanks I really like if ad well lots of room for coral and things and plenty of swimming room as well here is what it looks like now

Much better! I like it!

My rule of thumb is that at this stage a tank should look no more than 1/3 full. Any more than that and you've got a rock tank instead of a fish tank! ;-)

If it were my tank I might still be inclined to remove most of the top-most rocks to allow more vertical growth space for corals....but that's because I know what kind of corals I like and that's what they need.

Do you know what inhabitants you are designing for yet? It's almost impossible to design for "anything" so it's worth thinking about and picking some favorites - or a favorite - IMO.

I really want to stick to some of the beginner corals I know I'm gitting a devils hand coral in the next week or so but after that I haven't really thaught about if but I'm open to subjestions

Another of my favorite pieces of advice to give out is to not pick your aquarium inhabitants out of fear. 99% of the time this is what "beginner fish" and "beginner corals" are all about.

You said you haven't really thought about it, but aren't corals one of the top reasons for setting up the tank (and spending all that money)??? :-) Spend some time while the tank is aging and decide what your goals for coral really are!

You should have some favorites in mind...if you find them (through research) to be hard to keep then pick something easy that's otherwise similar.

Every favorite will have its peculiar requirements and those requirements will help you decide how to best set up your tank. No more guessing or being afraid! :-)

Hope this helps!

P.S. Most leather corals are pretty hardy...most common "downside" is just size....but most are easy to frag down to size as needed....easier than most other corals in fact. As long as you really love the Devil's Hand it would be a fine coral to start with. Just be mindful of your tank's alkalinity on at least a weekly basis.

from pics shown on these forums i believe the xenia will overgrow your entire tank....another member should chime in here but from what i understand unless you're making a xenia tank then stay away from them.

IMO...Xenia, Anthelia and Green Star Polyps are beautiful corals. However, they are best placed on one rock on the sand far enough away from the main rock structure(s) so you can trim them back as they spread. As mentioned, Xenia will overrun everything. I have been ripping rocks out of my tank for nearly 2 years as they have become covered with Green Star polyps. I'm at the point that I now have 60-70lbs of rock in a tub in my garage waiting for me to completely rescape my tank to get rid of the GSP. Luckily, you can usually trade the GSP and Xenia with your local LFS for bare rock/store credit or pay it forward to another newbie wanting corals for their first tank.

I have Ben reading that as well and is making me rethink gitting them lol but I really want a frogspawn lol

Frogspawn is fine. It won't spread over everything nearly as quickly as GSP or Xenia. Also, Frogspawn is easily fragged.

I'm going to the lfs tonight to get my first coral and I'm so excited lol

That feeling will never change, I have the same excited feeling each time I visit the LFS or go to someone's home to buy a new coral. Pure Excitement.
That's the reason I love this hobby so much...

Couldn't agree more. I've been in the hobby for @10years and visit the LFS near work 2-3 times a week. Yet I still got excited at the thought of getting a nice frag and/or fish at the club meeting held there this past Saturday. I stand in front of my tank at night just to watch and see what moves.

I agree. Avoid xenia. Unless its something you really want. They are great for filtration in a sump but there is no way i would put in display. I have a friend that after many times and people twlling him not to put in his tank, he was so determined to put in his tank that now after 1.5 years his tank is completely overrun with xenia. Just my .02 cents.

The only reason I got is it was free and I'm going to keep a very close on it lol and I still dosent look all that good this morning

Hate to be a negative nelly, but those corals dying off will be the best possible outcome. :(

Both are horribly invasive and spread like a plague if they become established. Terrible beginner corals - just what I was warning about.

Sorry. :(
