You're right - it depends on the 'nutrient itself'. EDIT - to answer your question - yes - at some point the 'starting point' matters what that point is depends on your tank and the inhabitants.Does the starting point matter? Is it the nutrient itself or the "other" associated by-products from the origin of that nutrient that causes problems?
I wouldn't expect similar outcomes from dosing ammonia chloride to the equivalent amount of N in a pile detritus, if the N from both ultimately ends up as 20ppm nitrate.
