Are LEDS really the future?

Another really good blog on aquarium lighting can be found at ReefBrite titled "The Color of Light" by Tulio Dell: ReefBrite™ Blog - ReefBrite™.com | ReefBrite.com

He makes this very good point..."The bottom line is, while a light source may render a high PAR reading. Its suitability for reef aquarium use is still not certain. The main problem with PAR meters is that they measure photosynethethic energy in specific areas of the red, green, and blue regions simultaneously and do not discern between them. In my opinion the performance and quality of a reef lighting product should never be based on color, brightness or even PAR. Spectral power distribution/spectral intensity completes the circle and when used in conjunction with PAR gives you an accurate picture of the light you are placing over your reef or planted aquaria."

I bet in a few months many would look back and think how the Radions lack this and that, and how much better xyz is...AI might not be the best, but we can agree it is on top of the market along with Radions. Again, DIY accent(royal blue, blue, green cool white, etc) lighting looks good, but we(including anybody here) do not have data to prove it has reached the benefits the companies claim(not even close) for corals.

There is still alot of room for improvement. I have met several radion owners who are not satisfied with coral coloration and health and go back to t5 or MH after a few months.

A big complaint I often see are how Acans respond negatively to LED. Under other types of lighting, Acans are very easy to keep colorful and happy.

There is a reason so many used LEDs are for sale on here.

I agree, and again do not want to diss on LEDs, I just am upset the industry has been going solely towards led coloration for effects that don't result in best suitability for coral health itself. I also have come across many owners that spent lots of money on Radions and others and at the end are not satisfied with the result on the corals. Others are happy with it at the same time. If I had spent money like some have and gone back to mh or t5s, I would want to chime in my issues ran with the LEDs. After all, this would help us get towards improvement for the perfect setting someday. I have found pics of the lobos and acans before and after the switch and would like to post for feedback here. Will post it soon, and see what you think.

Hello I was just lost like between what kind of light MH T5 OR LED
I went with led to be honest cause no space for a chiller in the room and its always hot here...
At first I bought the worst led out their cause I wasn't convinced in this hobby the light sucked as simple as that...
All kinds of corals didn't last...
I started looking after a year and loved this expensive hobby.
I started looking again for a new kind of light until I met vertix illumina 260
It's expensive but I can't tell u how amazing is this light what do u think if I told it burned some new corals...
Now am growing some sps and they look great in color and growth they are grown In the past 3month around 3 to 5 cm each...
I love this light
