Are you an “impulsive reefer?â€

I ask that not to get some secret marketing data I can use to exploit your psychological weaknesses for my own nefarious purposes (hmm..but that does sound like an interesting idea..). Rather, I’m curious because I think that most reefers are not. Usually. Okay, maybe sometimes…

As reefers, we’re taught that nothing good ever happens quickly in a reef tank, and I’d tend to agree with that. However, as consumers, I think reefers sometimes make things happen quickly with last-minute purchasing decisions!

red-dragon-colony-shot.jpg

"I can make room for it on the left side of my tank. Yup."

I deal with lots of reefers every day, and I am occasionally surprised at the additional purchases that people make to “fill out†their orders- you know, to hit free shipping, get an extra piece to share with a friend, or just to “scratch that itch†to try a new species…It happens just often enough to make me think that reefers are not necessarily impulsive, but they are strategic. In other words, the purchase may not be something they would start their order with, but it justifies purchasing at the end in order to hit that free shipping number, etc.

I think many reefers really wanted that extra piece in the first place. A lot of times, they’ll mention, in passing, at the end of an order or other conversation, “So, are those Millies really that hard to keep in good color?†I get a sneaking feeling that they intended buy the coral anyways, and maybe just needed some assurance that it’s a cool piece, or within their skill set to maintain, or something like that. The impulse buy by is almost always something unrelated to their primary order (for example, 5 zoas, and then a Millie added at the last second)!

So very like us reefers, isn’t it?

And then, of course, there are those of us who are the polar opposite of this:

I recall driving my LFS employees crazy when I was younger, because I’d spend literally hours in the store, scrutinizing every aspect of a fish before I’d pull the trigger…or not (that must be why I drove ‘em crazy!). I would look at every fin ray, every gill movement…I’d look at every twitch and scratch and correlate it with known disease symptoms versus regular behaviors for the said species…I would sometimes bring my reference material (like Axelreod’s books and maybe the early Albert Thiel stuff after the dawn of the “reef†age, notes from Bob Fenner’s books in my hand later on), and would just geek out. Of course, I would second guess everything the LFS guy said because “the books†said otherwise, even though the employees worked with these animals every day of their lives…My first brush with aquarium-keeping “dogmaâ€, I suppose. My how things change!

Our "aquatic personality" is forged at an early age, I think.

I knew at an early age that I’d never be an “impulse reefer†(okay, impulse AQUARIUM KEEPER, to be more accurate). I think it might have come about because, when you’re a kid, you have a 10 gallon tank and $5.67 that you’ve painstakingly saved for months to spend. You need to be absolutely sure of your purchases. I was very thorough! Even as an adult, with a 225 gallon tank, and much more to spend, I still found myself doing the same thing (okay, maybe with my iPhone in tow, instead of some well-worn reference book). You should see me when I go to the wholesalers here in L.A….it could take me half a day to pick like 5 fish. At least when we obtain stock from our usual sources overseas, we’ve built up personal relationships to the point where these guys know our tastes, so that’s actually easier than going to the wholesaler’s facility!

Equipment choices are even more subject to analysis and absurd scrutiny, because hey- how often do you purchase a protein skimmer or a lighting system? ( OK, wait- don’t answer that). But seriously, when you’re sending the big bucks on a critical piece of life-support equipment, you want to get it right! One of the things I love most about my friend Jake Adams and the reef builders website is that they will analyze the heck out of almost anything, from an algae magnet to a new aquarium controller. Useful stuff for many of us- essential for anal-retentive reefers like myself.

The LFS- Where it gets serious...

Of course, impulsiveness can permeate every aspect of being a reefer, including setup and configuration of your tank. I may not be overly impulsive in terms of additions and purchases, but I CAN be spur of the moment on tank decisions. What exactly do I mean by “tank decisions?†For example, I’ll be scraping algae or some other mundane maintenance chore in my reef, and suddenly, I’ll notice a rock that seems “not right†somehow…â€Hmm, what if I move this guy over here…?†Of course, this almost always leads to a spontaneous “refreshing†of the aquascape, often taking hours to complete. Somehow, I find this relaxing. Weird. So it’s entirely possible to be analytical and calculating on some aspects of reef keeping, and spontaneous on others. I believe that this applies to many of us.

"If I just reposition that one rock..should just take a sec..."

And of course, there are reefers who are entirely impulsive, which is why you see entire 200 gallon tanks full of every frag imaginable, with plugs sticking out from every conceivable angle. Of course, I cannot, in all honesty, say anything negative about them, because some of these types keep us in business, lol!

What's wrong with a few more frags?

Not that it’s worth analyzing…but those of you who follow my rants all the time know that I love to postulate on- well, everything reef-culture related, and this is just another aspect to ponder.

So…it begs the question: Are you an "impulsive reefer?"

As always, share your thoughts...speak your mind...

Im only impulsive during live sales :) not enough time to scrutinize anything.

I was at one time, and now I am not (well ok, not as much as I used to be :) )

I am having issues with my tank, things seem to be going downhill on certain items kept, and no one can tell me why. So therefor until I can get it under control... my coral buying days are over.

I am guilty! Freakin addicted to frags and impulsive as hell. But I am learning alot and is just now arriving at my "sweet" spot in term of buying/selecting corals and equipments.

No. Yes. Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes. Almost never. IF.

This is another fascinating topic of the Hobby and Hobbyists in general Scott and......... so perfectly timed as was out visiting with our areas best LFS owner yesterday and browsing the tanks as any good or even concious Reefer would while there. Having NO INTENTION to purchase any livestock since I literally had to spend an hour of shuffling to squeeze in my recent UC purchase. Still though, always have a small soft-sided cooler at hand for 'just-in-case' Coral/Fish/frozen Food. OK, so back to chitchatting Reef and talking about this Coral or Fish or marketing trend or "Hey ! when and where did you bring in THAT CORAL from ?"..... question answered as recent Aussie shipment of all nice sized (fist to hand) wild colonies, unfortunately not Maricultured even so back to gossiping and "Do you remember this guy/gal or when these first hit the market" etc... "Hey Duane (my buddy) do you think IT will hold that Color in our Systems under our LED's ?" " Well, maybe.... it is pretty Cool looking and pretty **** big for that price" "Hmmmm, y'know really have no room even if I was ser.. OK I am interested, but still, just do not have any room for it" Back to discussing Corals of our Region and who has had success with this or that particular one.... and CRAP! "Hey! could just throw my name up on THAT ONE for hold until Friday"

So....... not always or even often, but sometimes IF. Though I did have the restraint to put it on hold to allow me to allocate some needed real estate for IT.

Cheers, Todd

I'm a seasonal impulse buyer. More likely with grey winter weather than in summer. How can you not be lured in by those awesome colors.

I'm pretty impulsive, but I do my homework. I'm normally pretty frugal and don't buy much but occasionally I'll get an itch and it won't be happy till I blow some money on something new.. also, if I'm in a nice LFS, all bets are off and I could come home with just about anything I think I can care for.

I'll only ever buy something on impulse if I already know a lot about it, if I do not I will just go research it first.

I think a lot of reefers- 'cause we're really a well-read lot by and large- fall into the "conditionally impulsive" classification: We read about stuff enough to know that when it's available, we've already done the mental hopscotch and simply need to pull the trigger!

I guess I'm lucky in that I'm both lacking in funds and prime reefing location. We have one lil swap a year (5-6 vendors) 1 LFS that sells SW fish & inverts but no coral. All my purchases come via online and then the majors only happen during tax return.
So my answer to your question is, no I'm not because I can't be-lol.

I try not to be as impulsive as I used to be since some of those impulse buys are now the things I am trying to get out of my tank!! I do have a hard time at frags swaps and shows as I feel like a drug addict in a drug house!!!

I'm terrible, haha. There is always two full frag racks in my tank. I wouldn't have it any other way though.

I can be impulsive, especially if I put myself on a forced hiatus from buying. Then when I've done my penitence and can buy again, I can sometimes be impulsive. My last 2 buys have been like that and they didn't turn out well so I'm back in the penalty box. I even used my wife to keep me from a recent fish purchase. I saw some very nice Yasha gobies at my lfs, they all looked good but I wasn't there to buy anything so I left. But ..... I kept thinking about them. So the next day my wife was close to the lfs so I had her go in and look at the fish, there was only 1 left and it wasn't eating and the guys wouldn't sell it - I'm luck that I have conscientious lfs near me. Anyway a few days later I'm back at the lfs (I found one of those Asternia starfish in my tank) and brought to the lfs to feed to one of there harlequin shrimp. And darn it, the last remaining Yasha goby was in the same tank as the shrimp (and the quickly being consumed starfish), and darn it, it ate when they fed it, so darn it I bought it. I saw that goby for maybe 5 minutes and I've never seen it again  So Yep, I can be impulsive.

Im a impulse buyer when theres good sales. But i only buy what i know i can keep alive and what i can frag for sale or trade.Ohter than that i do the research to make sure it will do good with all my aquarium inhabitants and corals.

I will buy on an impulse after spending a lot of time looking, talking, examining, looking some more, lol - I can't leave the LFS without buying at least something - I think the term Scott used - conditionally impulsive nails it for me

I started out insanely impulsive. If I ordered something online I would check the tracking every day. I would hit up the stores and always left with something. To anyone who has never been to Connecticut frag farmers market it is a high school teacher who does some marine tanks in a class. Every year he puts it on in the school last year I believe was over 50 vendors from Jason fox Pacific east and a bunch of reefers from there tanks all set up tables. My first time attending I felt the feeling of a little kid on Christmas again. I spent more money that year on cheaper stuff then I did the next year on high end stuff. Speaking off ffm when is unique corals gonna set up at ffm last year was over 800 people probably a thousand this year.
