Armageddons are Scaring me

Loosing my Armor of Gods not a week after the guy I got them from told me he was loosing his. Every one of my other zoanthids are doing great.

wow that sucks, and I was just thinking this morning how some nightmares would be great to have. But after reading about how hard they are to keep I think I'll back off and wait awhile.

Dude you gave us good deals, plus that's what backups do! That's the whole point in a back up. :D

I got some new goodies coming too, and once theyre ready, Ill share the wealth haha. I might be getting the ORA Red Planet this weekend, and Ive got a few other pieces that need growing out.

Rev, what kind of birdsnest did you give me? The base is turning green and its sprouting new growth like mad

Its the Tubs something something something that is popular...LOL!

Nightmares? I have never heard that myself. They are one of the fastest growing I have had and have never lost one no matter how many times I have fragged them.
THe ZFA on SWF started with 3 polyps on July 3rd and are now nearing 20 and I started with 6 of my own on the same day and have gone over 35 polyps. Just did a terrible job of a fragging this last Friday and the poor, damged loner has already made a comback and there 2 tiny polyps under it that I am suprised were not killed in the superglue, they have already popped up.
Maybe you got Armor of Gods, Armegeddons confused as being the same as Nightmares.

I think he was talking about Darth Mauls, since most of the people on here have tried multiple frags and lost them all.

yup thats what I meant darth mauls, mind was elsewhere while typing.

Dont say things like that $$ after i just bought some LOL

Paintballer, I got some of your arms from reef-lover and unfortunately they melted away within a few weeks. I tried dipping in lugols, higher flow, and more light, none of that helped. The strange thing is that they were acclimating next to my nightmares and darth mauls and those are fine.

The frag started to get a brown fungus so I dipped it and wiped the fungus off. Did yours have the same problem?

Another question is that i got the frag and there was a piece of shell attached, would the shell soak up more iodine during the dip and release it slowyly back into the frag causing it to melt?

My params are: between 79 - 80 degrees, 1.026, <2 nitrate, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, Ph 8.2, Alk 9dKH.

If anyone knows more I'd appreciate it.

reef-lover - all the other frags are fine and growing...........

AI NO KEA, Im very sorry to hear about you losing yours as well. I had the whole colony on a rock shaped like a Y and I just took a chisel and hammer to it and let em have it. The shell must have been in the rock piece reef-lover gave you.

I never had any brown fungus in my tank, at all. Could have been something that grew on them as they were dissolving just to feed parasitically. Its really up in the air concerning that. I know your parameters are fine, theyve survived nitrate spikes in my tank and even the upgrade from PC straight to MH, and they were about 3/4 of the way up in the tank. I really cannot explain the deaths, Id love to know. I would have sworn by them being one of the hardiest zoanthids/palys Ive ever had, and yet they all died off :squigglemouth:.

Sorry again to hear about your loss

The frag I left for myself had been cut from the rock with a razor and reglued to a new rock about 4-6 weeks prior to fragging them all, it was just an experiment. All should have made it, I mean mine had tons of buds. Now the pods have eaten them all, except for 3 babies smaller than peas.

The only possibilities I can think of are...

1) Bad responses to being shipping (it could explain everyone's deaths except for mine.)
2) Being nipped at while in the tank. I had a sixline at the time, which has since jumped, and it nipped at a couple of corals. He could have inflicted a small enough wound for my pods to break through.
3) Short term exposure to palytoxin? I fragged em on a towel, and put them all in a bucket of tank water. Of course a few of the polyps got mangled and it is *possible* that there was a trace amount of palytoxin that could have gotten to them. This is unlikely to me because I believe palytoxin is fast-acting and would have killed them far sooner than they did, and Im not even sure if it would effect zoos/palys.
4) Change to 20k bulb (this would explain mine, possibly many others.)

Thanks paintballer, I blame no one. It's just luck I guess. I had some blues that melted away and some horizons as well. Each had a shell attached and the same thing happened to both. That's why I'm gonna be very leary of frags with shells attached. It's just my observation but I'm 0 for 3 on frags attached to shells.......

I do like the arms, they're very nice looking especially when you have a colony...

I fragged a couple weeks ago, made about 7 frags of 5-7 polyps, 3 are starting to melt. the 4 that are still strong where taken off the original rock.
time will tell.

Good luck......... Hope they stay healthy.

Wow I havent had any trouble w mine? Hope it stays that way... Man I hate to see these dying off they re by far my fav paly ever.

My largest frag i got. Was about 18 Polyps. I fragged that into 5 diff frags maybe N have sold 2 and Still have like 4 frags. A 3 Polyp, and a 2 polyp, both of which I will send out Monday or next week sometime.

And I have a nother 3 polyp frag that has put off a about 5 babies in the last 2 week no kiddin. And the one polyp frag I have left has been one polyp now for like 3 weeks with signs of one baby polyp.

Just hoping I continue to have luck with them!

Nice rebel, keep us posted how they are.

Keep the two frags separated from each other, I wanna see if its contagious maybe.

oh wow, i'm not the only one that has trouble keeping this morph alive. i think i've purchased 2 frags on seperate occasions from bryan at pure captive a long time ago. they would always look good and multipled fast. i'd start with 4-5 polyps and hit 18-20 polyps in about a month and a half and they'd start dwindling from there. i purchased a frag from a local and it did the same. i'm wondering if they need extra food or something to supplement photosynthesis.

as for darth mauls, i haven't personally tried them, but a few friends of mine have i've been told they dwindle in numbers rapidly also. unfortunately, i think darth mauls are one of those morphs that come in and people buy the colonies to frag into single polyps and make a quick buck. on a side note, i've had good luck so far with valentine's day massacre's from atlantis, i started with 2 polyps and now have 10 within 2 months time and they seem to be doing well.

Whenever I put food in the tank, my armageddons would always retract. If I gave them food before they retracted, they wouldnt open for several hours afterwards. I dont know whether they actually ate the food or not, but I do know that I never saw them like re-release it into the water column.
