Asking for Advice: Who Do You Listen To?

I can tell you who I do not listen to

Anyone starting a statement with "I have been reefing for XXX years".

1. They are not focusing on success but want you to believe them base on time.
2. Generally reminisce of the "good old days" versus learning new advancement.

I will also say this; I'm constantly looking at advancements and implementing the ones I think that will help me.
I think I'm a little confused by both your statements. My tank says I'm successful as most people in the hobby for decades number one, number two, like I just said, I do look at advancements and Implement as needed.

Sorry that statement was not towards you. I seriously didn't see your post before I made this comment. Had to go back on the thread to figure out what you were refering to.

This is just base on my own experience.

I'll share my own thoughts on this too. I generally hear out everyone on topics, but usually apply them to my reefing if I think there is no long term harm in achieving a goal. In general, I know what works for my tanks, but there are areas I am lacking in sustained success. For instance, LPS are my weakness for some reason. Yet SPS are easier.
So I am not shy or stubborn in trying something out of my comfort zone, even if the crowd seems against it. I believe everyone has something to offer, and even the experts can learn from a beginner.

I'm an observer and reader and make my own decisions on everything. I also admit my failures. You need to find what works for you and go with it. There's no single formula for success. People tend to overthink and make this hobby way more difficult than it has to be. Wasting a whole lot of money and energy on things you can't control. I figured it out when I accepted that things will die in your tanks no matter how well it's doing. If you can light a $100 bill on fire and not cry you're ready for a reef tank. If not find another hobby. Simple

I was just saying that some "long timers" do have knowledge all locked up in there brain that is still pertinent for today's hobbyists.
If they are all like "LED's can't grow coral", well, I stay away from them too.

Oh there are a ton of old timers that I listen to.
We have a lot of folks near me that has horrible advice and their only justification is how long they have been in.
Like many others, I trust what I see versus what is said

Not all questions or advice needs to be aimed at or come from what people are calling experts. Beginners and experts alike can need general advice (especially if it’s out of thier wheelhouse) every now and then. Heck, Randy posted for help about a diy solar dc aeration pump solution for a small pond on his property the other day…. I’m sure he would accept a solution that made sense regardless of who it came from. I for example have brain farts….I think the medical term is CRS (can’t remember s$$t). I often ask a question about something simple that just isn’t making it through the grinding gears in my head…. No expert necessary but is welcomed

I have had aquariums since 1981. Got into saltwater in 2018.

Everyday is a school day.

I typically listen to people who say, take it slow, and don't add a bunch of stuff like chemicals and miracle fixes to your tank.

For real though. Even someone I find super trustworthy like dev from reef dudes and then from tidal gardens, I wouldn’t ever just do something cause they are doing it. I think you’ve got to take in all information and decide what makes sense for your tank. Someone with a gorgeous tank may be able to tell you what they are doing, but your tank may not be at the same maturity level, so it doesn’t apply. And I think someone who’s had crashes can likely supply a lot of insight on what not to do. So many factors, like budget, time, tank load, tank size, equipment, etc. That’s what my signature line on advice refers to “my advice is, don’t take my advice.” Don’t just do something cause someone else is. Do some research and ask questions to make sure it makes sense for you to try that technique.
