ATTENTION SPS KEEPERS PLEASE READ!

You could try a general description field or a distinguishing Characteristics field to cut things down. I looked through some of my old coral books and they break it down like this. Scientific name, Color, distinguishing Characteristics, similar species, natural habitat, aquarium care and reproduction. That covers everything you need but without 20 fields.

Love this idea, all good points, Rev got his hands full for a few days.
Maybe we can and I say maybe of course like a SPS of the month!
Members can send in a story about it, where they got it from and how long they have it grow rate and color, placement etc.....and some pics and TaDaaa..... another busy thread.

It really depends on the goal of the database. If it's only meant to be human browseable then fewer fields is better. If you want to support computerized searches then more fields with controlled values is better. For example implementing the query "show me a list of all corals that require medium light, require medium flow, are red or pink, have a non-tabling growth pattern, and are moderately difficult to keep" would be impossible to automate without fine-grained field and value support.

This is a great idea and will be helpful in many ways. One of the problems will be the variability of color, pattern, speed of growth, etc. from one tank to the next (and all of the specifics involved...light intesity, flow, nutrients, etc.). If you look at threads of peoples responses in the past to growth speed, one persons answer for the slowest grower is sometimes another's answer to the fastest. MH, T5 and LED will probably have to be have to be taken into consideration for all of the above as well.

Some data mining! I like it :)

Here are some screen shots of the Zoa Database being worked on which should give you an idea.

WOW Looking great:)

Keep them coming!

Suggestions on information i would find useful. Common name/originator
Scientific name (genus)
Initial release date Mother colony status (if known)
Alias (if applicable)
Relative hardiness
Relative growth rate
Light and flow preference
Special care needs (if any)
