Automatic Gate/Ball Valves

Well....it is a risk for sure but I can always kink the hose to stop while I yell at her ;). But I also am working on a better solution. I'm modifying a wagon with 2 20 gallon buckets. One with new water and one to hold what I take out. Then it should be as simple as wheeling in, tossing in a pump to remove then add.

Wish I would have planned out my garage a bit better because I'm sure I could have done something easier with automatic water changes...maybe another time.

I ran a vast array of hydroponics for about 20 years. I used x10 to control the water pump while filling and changing water. I cant tell you how many 1000s of gallons I've spilled relying on technology to stop the pump. I've ruined several floors and I'm sure there is still mold on some of those houses. At the end of my career with it, I switched to a foot controlled power switch. It never failed me and allowed hands free, remote operation at the expense of lugging around a long cord.

I have over 100 smartthings in my home now... Philip's hue... smart locks... HVAC control... while its come a long way since X10 a couple decades ago, in no way would I rely on it for critical functions. Alexa is probably the furthest behind in being bug free. In one hand I think the idea of voice control is very cool and futuristic, but on the other hand I know that it's just another marketing tool for Amazon to listen to your conversations to narrow down what ads it sends you. I have conflicted views upon that. I certainly respect privacy, but if it can stop or catch a murderer or rapist, I am somewhat willing to give up my privacy.

Wow - that is a lot.

Yeah - I like to do home automation but I'm not at that level. A few years back we stayed one of the resorts in Vegas and the rooms are fully automated. Blinds, lights by room, tv, stereo, etc. Would be nice but still a bit expensive for some things other things not so much. And then the whole naming convention not to remember what the names are (joys of getting old :) ).
