Just coming back to the hobby after being out for 15 years. Just bought a 40 gallon breeder and am slowly amassing Parts. I do have some questions though.
1) I would like to run a sump with cheato refugium but am torn between using a 10 or 20. I would like to store it in the cabinet Under the breeder but would also like room for a small qt tank. Should I do a 10 sump and a 10 at or 20 10 one way or the other? Would like the rafugium to grow copapods.

2) right now I plan to have some type of goby and tiger pistol, a blenny, 2 clowns a flame hawk, and a wrass. Added to the tank in that order. Also, plan on trying mixed sps and lps corals with 2 100w nicrew lights. What other fish with character can I add and in what order. I would like to add a green Mandarin goby or mandarin fish hence the copapods. Would this work? Because My tank would technically be 60 gallons could I add more fish? If so what would go well with the fish I have chosen already? Should I avoid any of the fish I've choosen?
There only things I have purchased so far is there 40 gallon tank and 35 lbs of dry rock. I will be getting more. I'm just trying to make a plan and stick to it before I go in. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Welcome!
Looks like you have a good handle on the situation. I'm of the mind the more water the better but you definitely want to have room for dosing containers in the future IMHO. I have a super simple reef and thought I could do it without auto dosing, I ended up dosing Kalkwasser, magnesium, calcium, and sodium chloride (when kalk can't keep up) I have no sump my dosing and shelf take up half the space under my tank... Maybe your AT could convert to kalk when your coralline and corals take off.

I like your list of fish, more water + filtration = more fish, but... for me anyway I like to have fewer fish, less management. I've picked the ones I really like that don't put a hole in my pocket :) testing the water often will tell you if you have enough or too many fish...

Are you/did you drill out the 40g display for overflow?
You should start a build thread.

Welcome! I would suggest that you figure out what equipment you are going to want in your sump and lay out how they will fit. I would suggest to go as large as possible, but I think @Spicy Reef is right, to run LPS and SPS, you are probably eventually going to want room for dosing containers.

Good luck!

Welcome! The Green Mandarin and Wrasse will potentially compete for food. The Wrasse will win. Make sure you're ready to seed pods frequently to keep the Mandarin fed.

40 gallon DT is what matters when it comes to the fish as far as the minimum tank size requirements. For fish load it helps some having the additional water if you want a heavier fish bioload. I'm a fan of Gobies and Blennies. You've got Cardinalfish, maybe Firefish, Chromis...
