the cons are purely aesthetic, the ocean has a sandy bottom so a bare bottom tank looks nothing like that. i guess certain wrasse prefer a sand bottom for sleep, however my christmas wrasse is adjusting slowly but surely. sand sifting gobies are also out of the question and other sand sifting cuc as well.
now the pros are mainly aesthetic as well. you can increase your flow rate as many sps prefer without your sand blowing all over. my tank is bare bottom and all the detritus collects in one low flow zone making for easy cleanup. my personal theory is that having no sand also reduces the binding of phosphates to decorative calcourus surfaces in you tank. what does that mean? slows down old tank syndrome. i think you should try it, at first i didnt like it in my dt but now i love it. consider cutting some nice marble tile or something similar for the bottom. im thinking about covering my floor with zoa n paly.
