So as a bday gift(not till may)I'm going to get myself a 20g fusion tank I have the 10g now with black sand I plan on doing a bare bottom on the 20g what the pros and cons about a barebottom

the cons are purely aesthetic, the ocean has a sandy bottom so a bare bottom tank looks nothing like that. i guess certain wrasse prefer a sand bottom for sleep, however my christmas wrasse is adjusting slowly but surely. sand sifting gobies are also out of the question and other sand sifting cuc as well.

now the pros are mainly aesthetic as well. you can increase your flow rate as many sps prefer without your sand blowing all over. my tank is bare bottom and all the detritus collects in one low flow zone making for easy cleanup. my personal theory is that having no sand also reduces the binding of phosphates to decorative calcourus surfaces in you tank. what does that mean? slows down old tank syndrome. i think you should try it, at first i didnt like it in my dt but now i love it. consider cutting some nice marble tile or something similar for the bottom. im thinking about covering my floor with zoa n paly.

Thank you for the info I always been a fan of bare bottoms since I seen wwc dt in person and I don't think I'll have any wrasslesor sand swifting fish but I do have a mandrian will that be ok ? I plan on having a wave maker to move the detritus to one part of the tank like you were speaking of and I was thinking zoas n palys but think I'm going to doing some encrusting montis and favia
