Beginner Bean Animal and Sump Questions

I'm running a 1 1/4 return and 1 1/2 drains on my 40 breeder with a DCP 8000 running at 40%.

A single 3/4" return should be adequate for 300 gph with 7 ft of head from your pump. A 3/4" siphon would be OK as well with less chance of trapping air and becoming noisy, but I would probably make the overflow and the emergency 1". I would not use an Eclipse overflow if you want quiet. The outer box sits well below the normal water level in the tank and will create a noisy waterfall. I would recommend the Modular Marine, Exotic Marine or Fiji overflows.

Thanks!!

What size and type sump are you running? Hope much flow do you estimate you're getting through your sump?

Thanks. That all makes sense.

Make sure you use the same size pipe for return and overflow. I didn't make mine match to 3/4 inch and am considering redrilling the return line because it is 1/2 inch. I do have a controllable return pump, bean animal and 40b/20 gal setup.
Sorry, I missed this the other day. Could you tell me more about your setup?

Thanks!!

It's a 40 breeder turned into a sump. The first section is 17 inches of refugium, middle section has enough room for a life reef VS3 24 skimmer and 2 bio plates and 1 bio brick and then it goes through a bubble trap to my return pump. It's probably moving around 6-700 gph. I can run it at full bore which is about 1500 gph given the probable friction loss. Just remember the bigger your return line the less you lose on head pressure. Also having larger drain lines shouldn't be an issue if you are using a gate valve to get a full siphon going. I'm using the reef synergy shadow 16 and have no issues with it.

Here it is

Thanks for the reply.
