Being “followed”?

I’ve been following people for months/years and never received an alert about them. A couple days ago I noticed the “your news feed” tab, shows activity from the people I follow for instance if they post a comment anywhere or if they like a thread/post/etc.

Oh, today even I learned something. Thanks!

@samnaz is correct. Following people only means they show up in your personal news feed. It never gave you alerts. At least not in the two years I have been here. You can also find them if needed in your followed list.
