Benefits of Coralline Algae?

Agreed there will always be statistical outliers but just check the trends in Threads and see if LED isn't suppressing by some unknown mechanism

My Pico Reef method has never veered from the original date and led is the only change I've gone through but it never killed it off my rocks just the glass interestingly

I'm on just whatever LEDs comes with a kessil and however that works out it doesn't support coralline within my set of unique variables
 
Interesting thread so far, I run 100% LED only on my display and after 2 months my tank was covered entirely in Coraline including all the rocks. Interesting enough I have never had an algae problem in the display but I have a frag tank setup with T5 and had a Hair algae problem in there for a bit and Coraline doesn't grow as fast in there as it does in my display.
 
I have LEDs and my tank started growing it recently. I don't think they have a problem with it. I hope my rocks turn completely purple. I love the look.
 
The power of coralline in cycle assessment in pics

One of these two vats from LFS doesn't require a darn thing from our help or offerings from a bottle to do exactly what they were designed to do. You take the rocks home, put them in your tank, and reef, they don't need bacteria re added (48% of every cycling post ever put on the internet) and they certainly don't need ammonia added to them, the whole procedure is lined out due to a pigment.

We don't require APi ammonia to ballpark us an answer either


Coralline equals cycled.

I have no idea about LED's and coralline growth. I started my tank with dry pukani and g4 radions. The rock is getting completely blanketed by coralline and it really makes it look nice and mature. In a couple of weeks I'll be supplementing my LED's with t5's. It will be interesting to see how the coralline react to the change.
 
A benefit of coralline is proving API wrong in ten thousand four hundred eighty one posts, per Google. That's only page one


API, and/or green v yellow interpretation variance, caused the most damage in the hobby to the understanding of cycling-to trust in our systems- and coralline undid it. Restored microbial trust right up until they started faking it heh

How long did that take?

Mine is showing up in little spots but not mass blanketing. My tank has been up for about 3 and a half months though.
 
Dont agree with that, my photos above (in post #10) are from using 5400k leds over the sump.

This is an area that interests me. Why some people struggle to get coraline to grow with LEDs, while others have luxurious growth under nothing but LED light. I suspect the the spectrum of the LEDs has a lot to do with it. Based on the reflection in your photo, and thinking about what a 5400K LED spectrum would look like, I am betting that you have a fair number of white, phosphor converted LEDs in your fixture? My suspicion is that coraline needs a full spectrum that is typical of phosphour converted LEDs (and T5, MH, etc.).

In my frag, I was getting a little burgundy coraline that glows bright orange on new growth under LED (AP700), and not much else as far as growth. After I added in a couple of Coral+ T5 supplements, I am getting purple and green coraline as well now. The burgundy coraline is probably still there, but is not growing (and glowing) like it once did.

It started much like yours, by the sound of it. Tiny little patches, that slowly grew. 3 month mark sound about right when I first started to notice it. I'm guessing around the 5 or 6 month mark is when not a single rock was without coralline, and most of the circles of coralline were now converging together. For some reason, coralline has a selective affinity for things made of plastic... my loc line returns are getting covered along with just one of my WAV circulation pumps. The other WAV doesn't have a spot on it! Weird.

I would agree with this statement, although I have no data to support it. I haven't looked at my radion settings for a while now, and the thought of "adjusting" them doesn't appeal to me. If anyone else runs radions through the WXM module like I do... I don't have the slightest clue of what I'm looking at there. WAY too many choices for somebody like me. I just downloaded a profile that was from somebody else who had the same sized tank and left it at that.

Another interesting note along the lines of LED's/spectrum/coralline growth; I run a Kessil H380 in my sump for the cheato. I've had it since the beginning. Zero coralline growth inside the sump. None.
 
My main display uses an evergrow it5012 led fixture with just the white and blue channels on (30% and 75% max respectively). I have just recently added 2 54w t5 fixtures back and front with iquatics aquablue 50:50 bulbs. My back and sides is completely covered now which is sapping my alk big time.

The original "Reef" LEDs were all pretty much blue and white diodes. If you are using off the shelf LED bulbs (E.g. household LEDs), then they are not that much different then what the first versions of the reef lights all used before the full spectrum craze (E.g filling in the missing parts of the spectrum with discrete colours). Household bulbs are essentially phosphor converted blue LED diodes. Depending on the kelvin rating, the blue peak will either be small compared to the green/yellow/red portion of the spectrum (E.g. warm white), or much higher (E.g. cool white).

Another interesting note along the lines of LED's/spectrum/coralline growth; I run a Kessil H380 in my sump for the cheato. I've had it since the beginning. Zero coralline growth inside the sump. None.

So this would say that coraline does not like mostly red light with only a bit of blue and UV added in.

Were you getting coraline growth before the addition of the T5's? If your main LED is using Blue and White diodes, I would have expected you to have coraline using only the LED. The 6500K LED that you are using in your sump is almost entirely white LEDs (43 white, 6 blue 460nm).

I have only LED lights on my tank. I started with dry rock and rocks are completely covered in coraline algae only 8 months in. It has more to do with water quality. I keep sps so meaning my tank water conditions are pristine for sps growth.
 
I am not a fan of coraline algae. In the real world on a reef you actually see very little of it, so I don't think a tank covered in it look natural. My tank running 9 years has virtually zero and that's the way I think it should be. Cheers
 
I think coraline
Has to be all over the ocean. Isnt the proof all of our tanks? We seed our tanks from live rock that comes from the ocean and it ends up in our tanks. I dont think you see it because a reef is cover in mass amounts of coral, you dont see the bottom.
